I've gotten a handfull of grease struck coins...all State Quarters. I also got a Guam quarter with a major die chip a few months ago...
that sounds good ,do you know much about error pennies such as 1971s d/d,in color die from red to almost purple, but only half the penny karl
Actually just started looking since joining the forum & found nothing yet , my family is wondering why I'm carring a 10x loop and checking everyones change lol, lol, lol
hi i was in germany several years ago,and bought a coin with hitlers face and the swatztika on back at the time the man stated that it is really but they where circulated, and lord and behold i was in colorado springs in the numismatic store and found one in there if i can post it i will
I found a 1995 doubled die in a bag of pennies. I also found a Louisiana quarter with a really strange-looking obverse-- it looks like a thin cloth had come between the die and the planchet during striking. It probably isn't much, but I also found a very nice 1982 zinc cent that has raised lines that look like rays around the word LIBERTY, from breaks in the die I would assume. And while I didn't get it from a bank, I found a late stage die cap error cent in a bag of foreign coins that I had bought.
Thanks, the wayi understand it their where some but never circulated i saw one at the numismatic store in colorado spring and they said, the same thing but i really dont know thanks for your reply
......my brother found a jefferson nickel capped die that i sent to coin world. they actually did a story on it in the may 18th 2009 issue in the collectors' clearinghouse segment. http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc158/katek1304/Raysnickel2.jpg .....the story can be found in the online CW archives.
That's a nice example! Is that a "struck through capped die" or a "capped die" - looks like it was struck by a capped die?
2002 Louisiana quarter These scans don't really do it justice, but here are a couple of pics of the Louisiana quarter I mentioned upthread. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused the obverse strike to be so weak and bumpy?
Well, I'm glad you like it. I'm wondering if it may be a very late stage die cap? After comparing with the picture of the die cap nickel, my quarter seems to show a similar surface, except that it is much less defined. I'm sure glad I looked at both sides of the quarter. It was in a bag of other quarters that I was going to deposit in my bank account, and I decided to give the bag another look before heading over to the bank.
I found my current avatar, a 19XX Lincoln cent (pre-1993) with a late-stage die cap and intruding planchet in a bank box of cents. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Wide AMs posted earlier in this thread are a die variety and not an error.
