Scotland Queen Mary(1542-1567) Half Lion of 22/- 1553 Gold 22 Shillings, crowned shield, I G either side, rev. crowned monogram MR, date in legend, 2.49gms S.5396. The I G on both sides of the shield are for James, Earl of Arran, Governor of Scotland. Curiously, he was next in line to the Scottish throne, being descended from James II. He was appointed regent in 1542, and would subsequently negotiate with the French for Mary's marriage to the Dauphin Francis. For his efforts he was created Duke of Chatellerault. In 1554 the regency was surrendered to Marie of Guise, Queen Mary's mother. The Latin legends on this coin, Maria Dei Gra R Scotorum translates to Mary Queen of the Scots, whilst on the reverse Diligit Iusticiam translates to observe justice. This particular coin is S-5396, and SMA22S-005.
Another National Treasure coin You guys have stuff I never even knew existed lol. Thanks so much for posting.
Problem is, I know way too much about these coins, and have come to the realization that I cannot afford most of them
Some nice gold here. A James I second coinage rose-ryal, valued at 33 shillings, this is one of the last incarnations of the fine sovereign which started life as a coin of 20 shillings in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII, but was then slightly debased due to Henry VIII's extravagances before being revalued at 30 shillings during Mary's reign and finally increased by a further 10% in 1612. Struck in 23ct gold, 41mm diameter and weighing 13.33g, this is quite a chunky piece. The obverse mark is cinquefoil over trefoil over tower over mullet over coronet, indicating the die had been in use for 5 successive pyx periods. The reverse die which typically had a shorter working life, is cinquefoil over trefoil over tower. Ex G W Shaw 202, Sotheby 21/7/1924; R C Lockett 2075, Glendining 11/10/1956 and Lord Stewartby 1008, Spink 26/9/2016.
And as a few things seem to have crept in here valued at less than 20 shillings or the equivalent, here is an Edward IV ryal valued at 10 shillings. The mintmark long cross fitchee was used right at the end of the first reign.
Great coins Robp! Here is my Half Ryal ND Tower Mint Edward IV (First Reign) Got this as "unsold" lot from Heritage
I don't have any "sovereign" sovereign, but a bunch of french 20 francs. From what I've seen in this trhead I think they count Q
Q.... I still do not get the proper meaning. I thought it was based on European "sovereigns" or heads of state= Emperors/ Kings/ Queens/ Princes/ Counts/ Dukes/ Cardinals/ Archbishops/ Popes/ Earls/ Bishops/ etc. So Louis Philippe/ Napoleon I Bonaparte/ Louis Napoleon III/ Louis XVIII are all Kings/ Emperors. Republican issues ????? Here are a few of my entries from your Country..... AV Ecu d'or ND St. Quentin Mint/ Charles VI "le Fol" 1380-1422 Valois King of France AV Florin d'or ND Viennes Mint/ Dauphin Humbert II 1333-49 Dauphin de Veinnois AV Louis d'or France 1644-D Lyon Mint/ Louis XIV 1643-1715 "Sun King" AV Florin d'or ND Orange Mint/ Duke Raymond V of Orange 1340-93 AV Mouton d'or ND/ NM/ Jean II "le Bon" of France/ Valois AV Ecu d'or 1635-B Rouen Mint/ Louis XIII 1610-43 King of France
Probably a misunderstanding on my part @panzerman. As I get it a sovereign isn't necessarily a coin bearing the King/Queen face (every coin, be it gold, silver or whatever would then be a sovereign), but rather a gold coin type, meant as a small bullion for people to invest their wealth into gold in an easy way. What I called "sovereign" sovereigns are those from the UK and commonwealth which are called that way. Many other countries have struck similar gold coins, although, when it comes to the european 20 francs or equivalent in different countries, they're a bit lighter than a sovereign As a matter of fact the OP started with a french 3rd republic "rooster" 20 francs, reason why I allowed myself to post some Gorgeous coins BTW John, especially the Jean II mouton d'or, I love it Q
Thank you! I think all that matters is that we get people to post their treasured coins, and we all benefit from that I am cleaning the house from Christmas activities, so I am happy to think about coins. By the way, I love your Napoleon Consular AV 20 Francs. I have all French rulers from 1610 on. still need Henri IV AV coins/ they are very $$$$ in MS Here is my fav. one....
