    It has to be abrasion. If the blank had problems before the plating the zinc would all be plated over and the ridges would have been flattened during the striking. You can't have raised features on a coin unless there is a corresponding void in the die. The only exception to this is raised areas caused by corrosion of the coin metal AFTER striking.
