This unpublished erotic spintria is to be auctioned on 20th February by Timeline London (Lot 0229). It has an unusual reverse, resembling North African unciae. edited
I think you can't post images such as the one shown on your coin. Don't be surprised if it gets deleted.
Really, the administrators of this board would censor ancient art? Here's an article about censorship of ancient art in museums: Museum censorship more scandalous than erotic art From the article: "The fact that these pieces are even considered scandalous is baffling considering the historical and social contexts of the artwork. Eroticism is a key aspect of classical history and artwork." I realize that this board isn't a museum, and that the administrators can determine the rules and standards that they wish. But it is devoted to the appreciation of ancient art and artifacts, and by extension, ancient history and society. To censor ancient art on this board seems silly.
CoinTalk is not a Museum.. That's not erotic it's sodomy and I don't like it. I wish for my opinion to be respected.
True, but I have to wonder about the intent of the OP, who has only a handful of CT posts, with only ~one on the ancients board 12 years ago. Edited for clarification: I am not at all opposed to posting spintria or other coins which might be considered erotic or taboo in segments of today's society. I simply wondered why the OP, who has few posts on the ancient board, was compelled to bring this to everyone's attention. I find it more troubling that he posted a coin currently up for auction. As I've said many times, I believe that is a bad practice.
It's difficult to guess intent based on his post. I don't see anything in his words that would indicate abusive intent. Certainly images like this have he potential to be abused. Abuse of such imagery, or imagery presented in an abusive context, is a different issue than straight censorship.
If someone knows they'd be offended by Erotic images why would they click on a link entitled "Erotic Spintria"? It's pretty clear what was going to be in the thread. Should we not post coins with the Satyr and Nymph, or Rape of the Sabines, Venus? I respect everyone's views but let's take some personal responsibility for what we click on.
Believe me.. I am an opened minded person. I actually thought it would be something more classy not nasty. I work across the street from The Sex Museam here in NYC. I have visited it and they actually are more proper erotica than nasty erotica.
You have Roman coins depicting soldiers carrying the severed heads of their enemies but a token depicting people having sex is somehow more offensive?
True CT is not a museum but it is by its very design a place for education about coins. The OP coin is an important part of numismatic history and deserves to be discussed and studied whether someone dislikes it's subject matter or not. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe in the past the policy has been to delete overly enthusiastic descriptions, drawings and ummm... live action illustrations but that the coins themselves are fair game for reasonable academic discussion.
I totally understand. And I respect your opinion. Nobody has to respect mine but I have the right to share it. (I think I opened up a can of worms ) Peace
For the record, posting pictures of coins like the one that has been removed, or any of a similar nature - is not allowed on this forum. And it makes no difference if the coins are modern or ancient, or who posted them - they are simply not allowed - period.
I agree with all of your points TIF... but nonetheless I'm appalled that the OP coin can't be shown on this board. It's enough to make me seriously reconsider my modest participation here. Phil Davis
So all sorts of violent or patriotic porn can be shown here with no problem, but (presumably) consensual sex between adults cannot? It's easy enough to find non-numismatic photos objectifying women posted here, also apparently OK as long as the naughty bits are covered. How would you define the moral standards of this board?
