Picked up this very rare coin of Antoninus Pius at a good price taking in consideration the wear. The reverse depicts three temples the two outside are shown as a corner view in perspective and the centre one looks to be the temple of Artemis with statue of Diana/Artemis, and the distinctive rectangular opening in the pediment the two on the outside also have statues or people standing. As most of you probably know the temple of Artemis was rebuilt three times and each time it got rebuilt it became larger and more impressive, to be considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Some of you coin lovers or history scholars might have some idea of what the other temples were on site and would love you to share any thoughts on it. Bronze coin Ephesos, Ionia Antoninus Pius T AIL KAISAR ANTWNEINOS Head of Antoninus Pius laureate r. EFESIWN. DIS NEWKORWN Three temples. 19.00 grm 35.6 mm BMC 78, 235. Rare. I have searched for any other types of this coin and have only come up with this one below in CNG archives, In a lot better shape than mine is a slight variant in as much part of the legend on reverse is above the temples where as mine has the legend entirely in exergue. My guess is moving the legend down as my one enabled the celator to increase the height of the columns and give the temples a bit more detail over all. CNG 100, Lot: 1723. Cool and interesting posts guys!! I also seem to have a special fondness for architectural types, although I only have a few----probably because I also LIKE Galleys, obscure deities etc etc....
@Mikey Zee got me to look again... Is Romulus' reverse a Temple? RI Romulus 310-311 CE AE25 Domed Shrine doors ajar with sm Eagle
Very interesting despite substantial wear.with such interesting reverse, one forgives the poor obverse.
Nice coin OP. I don't have any architectural types yet but I'm looking at a Maxentius follis which may fit the bill.
This one is on the list to be attributed, so I don't know the coin's specifics. As far as I know, the reverse is a temple. Edited to add: wow my pics suck...I will find a way to make them smaller and clearer.
