This series of Danish notes was designed and engraved by Gunnar Andersen, in collaboration with Wilkinson and Son's Printers in London. The notes were later printed by the successor company, Bradbury Wilkinson and Company and finally by Thomas De La Rue after the printing companies merged.
This is one of those stirring, very well detailed and engraved vignettes that makes an impression - very important in banknote design and in the effort to thwart counterfeiting: This note was first issued beginning in 1990, but was updated in 1996 with enhanced security features. The vignette on the note is of Clara Schumann(1819-1896) a composer, pianist, and wife of composer Robert Schumann. In an era when males were the main breadwinners in families, Clara Schumann actually became the main source of income for her large family with her husband and seven surviving children. Even great composer Johannes Brahms admired her works and collaborated with her on several of her works. This fantastic note with it's lovely engraved vignette of Clara Schumann was designed by Reinhold Gerstetter, working with Bundesdruckerie - the German Federal currency printer.
Another very memorable and stirring vignette, engraved by Nigel Alan Dow, this work dates to 1956, and represented the advent of a whole new series of English banknotes that replaced the famous "White" notes - how better to replace a classic and popular design with an even more classic and lovely design?
I love when artistry and my banknote hobbies merge: Note: Edited to conform to Leave it to Beaver standards of depiction of the feminine allegory omnipresent herein in said venue. This lovely note: Whoops, canna post it because I didn't hae time to edit the note image, only the important vignette. Guess you prurient types will just hasta see my website me thinks.:desk: Anyway the lovely 20.000 Lire note from Italy was designed M. Armenti using the painting by Tiziano(Titian) Sacred and Profane Love.
I don't know how I missed this thread before, but thanks for bringing it back from the abyss. I do enjoy vignettes such as these.

I bought a couple of more items that GFC Smillie worked on this week, one a national and another an intaglio print. I still have to image the national and get the print and research them and then I will continue this thread.
Good summary of the presentations, Krispy. Here's one you missed: A Micro-Puzzle on French Banknotes, by DaveM [9/16/2010]
A Continuation of the Presentation of G F C Smillie GFC Smillie was working with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in DC when the very popular Series 1901 Legal Tender $10 was being designed - his major contribution to this note's design is the female representing Liberty on the reverse of the note:
Engraved Vignette of Hazel Dawn (Tout) ca. 1917 Hazel Dawn was the stage name of Vaudevillian actress Hazel Tout, a trained musician who starred in Ziegfeld's Follies as the "Century Girl" during their production on Broadway during the 1917. Hazel Tout had been born in Utah, the daughter of a LDS(Mormon) missionary who subsequently travelled through western Europe where she acquired her musical prowess. In addition to her great talents as a musician she was remarkably lovely: Fascinatingly her portrait from the topmost photograph had been engraved by GFC Smillie and prints were made from the engraving: And were distributed either through sales or gifts to friends by Mr. Smillie, who also inscribed and autographed the portraits. This vignette was done near the end of his very long career. Hazel Dawn continued to have small acting parts in plays, and some work in production until she married in 1927. Incredibly she lived a very long life - passing away only in 1988 at the age of 96 years.
What a beautiful engraving, SM. Do you own this one with the dedication on it, and is there a story about how you found it? Dave
I don't know how I missed this thread--it's just wonderful! Actually, I DO know: I wasn't a member yet. Proof that there is benefit to updating old threads, so new members have an opportunity to see some of the great stuff that's been posted in this forum. I'm certain I have some GFC Smillie works I can add to this. Give me a little time...
I'm really glad you brought this back to the forefront with all the new additions! Excellent presentation and fantastic vignettes!
