Do you have a .925 planchet 1920 shilling? I have the threepence and sixpence in both alloys but not aware of a .925 shilling??
Not sure - I'm guessing a circulating example but maybe not? Agreed - I thought only the threepence and sixpence were struck with both alloys, although that's based on what Davies said in 1982. How do you tell? Is it just based on ring?
Yes, I think it is the pitch or ring which is higher pitch on the sterling. BTW, I have often seen this erroneously reported as lower pitch, which is wrong as a higher note has shorter wavelength sound energy produced. Also, the color is generally a bit more yellow (esp. on lightly circulated examples) and as you mention it will post a couple of pictures; the worn specimens are at least to me obvious on immediate inspection but must say I look at all the 1920 and 1921 coins I get carefully. Post to follow will show a couple of late sterling shillings versus early 0.500...
Finally I found it: my oldest shilling. Originally in my lower-end box then moved to the sd box for some reason. Eliz-I, hammered shilling, cross-crosslet mm (1560-61) yes it has a dent on the face. bought for $23, Frank J Robinson, NY Geo-III, shilling, 1787, uncirculated CE Bullowa Auctions, Philadelphia, PA
Just got these two in. $10 and $25 respectively. 1864 shillings are tough in that sharpness grade, 1719 shillings are tough period. In fact George I is a tough monarch for shillings with the exception of 1723 SSC.
If you like Victoria shillings, please search the post I did here on Cointalk on the 1863/1 - this is a great one....
A couple of shillings. First up an 1893 veiled head And second, an 1863 Wiener pattern half florin (shilling) in copper
Really lovely examples you've got there. I've struggled to find a serviceable 1920 or 1921 example. Seems both are tougher than the "key dates" to me. Along side 1924 though I have managed one of them recently.
Indeed. Do post pictures; I find the George V issues of the war years and the early 1920s very interesting and appreciate not only well presented currency pieces but the rather scarce patterns.
