We have already discussed the portraits of Elagabalus (218-22) with the "horn" unique to his portraits. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1st-elagabalus-denarius.296946/ But, that was months ago and this one came today: Denarius. 20-19 mm. 2.92 grams. IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, bust right, laureate with "horn", draped and cuirassed right PM TRP IIII COS III PP Emperor holding out patera with right hand over flaming altar and cradling cyprus branch [How do we know that is what it is?] in left, * in field left. Struck year IIII, as all of these apparently are. Sear II 7536, AD 221. If you have any "horn" portraits or other Elagabalus coins not shown in the previous thread let's see them!
What a great coin, thanks for sharing. I don't have an Elagabalus in my collection yet, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for a 'horn' portrait-style when the time comes.
Here are a few of mine:- Elagabalus denarius Obv:– IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, horned, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG, Elagabalus standing holding patera over an altar and branch. Star in right field. Horn on ground to his left Minted in Rome. A.D. 222 Reference– BMC 209 note. RIC 87 (where it is rated Common citing Cohen). RSC III 58. Cohen 58 (illustrated with star in right field) valued at 50 Fr. No examples in RD. ex Numismatica Ars Classica NAC AG Sale 42, Lot 379, 20th November 2007, ex Barry Feirstein Collection, previously privately purchased from Harlan J. Berk. Described as Lightly toned and good extremely fine by NAC. 21 mm. 3.11 gms. 0 degrees. The coin would certainly seem to be scarcer than the "Common" rating given in RIC would imply. No examples in RD, only one example on acsearch (this coin). No examples on Wildwinds (the RIC 87 there would appear to be in error). Elagabalus denarius Obv:– IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, horned, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG, Elagabalus standing holding a patera over an altar and a club. Star in left field. Bull behind the altar Minted in Rome. A.D. 220-222 Reference– BMC 209-210. RIC 88. RSC III 61 Elagabalus denarius Obv:– IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, horned, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– SVMMVS SACERDOS AVG, Elagabalus standing half-left, sacraficing over a patera over an altar and holds a branch. Star in left field Minted in Rome. A.D. 222 onwards Reference– BMC 232. RIC 146. RSC III 276. Remanants of star in right field. The die having been re-engraved to place the star correctly in front of the emperor Martin
You've seen this example in the thread you cited, but I'll repost this horned Elagabalus. Elagabalus, AD 218-222 Roman AR Denarius; 18.3 mm, 3.20 gm Obv: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate and draped bust right REV: SACRD DEI SOLIS ELAGAB, Elagabalus, in priestly robes, standing right, sacrificing over altar and holding cypress branch, star in field, right Refs: RIC 131; BMCRE 225; Cohen 246; RCV 7542.
Apparently the horn was an eastern symbol of divine power. That's what I've found after some extensive google searches. I need to add an Elagabalus to my collection.
Great Elagabalus horns everybody. I only have one and it is a bit cruddy, but the price was right ($9.33): Roman Empire - Denarius Elagabalus (221-222 A.D.) IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, horned, bust right / SACERD DEI SOLIS ELAGAB, Elagabalus sacrificing over lighted altar, star in right field. RSC 246; Sear 7542; RIC 131.
@maridvnvm, mine also seems to be RIC 87. The keys being(?): INVICTVS legend, not SVMMVS; branch pointing down, not a club cradled in the arm; no bull behind the altar; and some object in the bottom right that RIC calls a "horn". Mine also shares with yours the star behind the emperor rather than in front.
Here's one of my favorites that I haven't posted in a while: Denarius of Elagabalus, Antioch Mint, circa 218-219 AD ANTONINVS PIVS FEL AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right FELICITAS TEMP Galley with sail right, eight rowers and pilot holding rudder; 'acrostolium' and standard at prow.
