Neat EL Stater 7.76g/19mm. 50/50 AR/AV composition (dated HOV=181AD obv/ Bosphoran King Sauromates II 174-210AD rev/ Roman Emperor Commodus 180-92AD (to me looks more like Marcus Aurelius!)
I got that one, three years ago. I had to set my alarm clock for 4:00AM/ since auction stated at 4:00/ my lot was #12, so had to be sure not to miss it! Last week/ the bloody computer froze during a "Heritage Auctions" Tuesday internet US obsolete currency session/ because of that I lost my lot. One good thing is that, the computer (brain) in our body never has that problem Thanks for all your kind comments....kinda nice after working all day in persistant light rain....trimming cedar hedges.
Id argue that.. my brain freezes all the time!! What do you do during the winter months if you dont mind me asking?
During the Winter.... Walk the dog/ snowmobile/ collect coins/ lift weights/ and my wife makes me do house cleaning also bake homemade cinnamon buns (have four at breakfast each and every morning) almost forgot/ have to sort out my butterfly/moth trade for FDC Roman aurei!
Panzerman-- I'm really looking forward to seeing your Roman aureii which you are receiving in trade for part of your butterfly/moth collection. It sounds like you are getting some spectacular coins!
I never would have guessed that a butterfly collection would have that much value! I know lots of people here have other interests, but I know which one I would choose Do you have a couple pictures of your butterfly collection to share? Seems like an interesting/unusual sort of thing that might be cool to see, especially if it is high enough quality to trade for Roman gold!
An unusual feature of the Bosporus coinage is that the legends read from counterclockwise - they may well be nearly unique in that aspect.
Another fantastic golden winner, panzerdawg ... oh, and when my computer freezes I merely bring it inside the house! I'm sure that I've posted these examples before, but that's never stopped me from posting them again (and again) ... Kings of Bosporos Sauromates II ... both have cool Sep-Sev counter-punches
Counterclockwise legends can be found on some Roman Imperial coins as well. Here's an example borrowed from @David Atherton's Forvm gallery: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-4186 ...
