Posting picts of Eisenhower dollar that has clad on obverse damaged somehow around outer rim. Trying to determine if a mint error or whatever. need your expert opinons. please see picts.
This is just a guess, but isn't it possible that a pair of pliers with a smooth face could have caused this? Suppose the width between the faces of the pliers is not wider than the diameter of the coin. This would restrict the damage to the obverse alone, and not affect the edge along the reverse. Chris
Clearly, the coin was struck round, in collar before the deformation. Exactly what happened afterward is anybody's guess. My guess is that the edge of the coin was impacted from an angle by something hard. I strongly suspect that the coin was repeatedly held at an angle, tails up, and dropped on a hard surface, such as a concrete slab or pavement.
