That's an interesting example, Jim. It illustrates why sellers also have a tough time with Paypal and how some of them feel that it gives the buyer the chance to rip them off with such a tactic. I have read numerous complaints from sellers about how Paypal puts the buyer at the advantage. As with eBay, I think Paypal is also one better mouse trap away from oblivion, although it may be a while before that better mouse trap arrives.

BTW, rlm, I do know that 0 isn't between 1 and 5; I was not being literal although it could have seemed that way in my previous post.

Yep. I placed two orders with two dealers on Sunday. Received the items on Wednesday - you wanta play with the big boys ship like the big boys. :) Now if I win the auction on Saturday night I will give them 3 days from Monday morning.

As for shipping the post office charges about 1.35 for insurance - the sellers should not charge more than that. As for the rest - a lot of sellers make profit on the shipping, you can tell buy how the coin is packaged. So if you want a 5 you better not send me a 10 cent envelope with a 10 cent flip, where the postage says a 1.65 - when you charged me $4 for shipping. And for what some people (and yes that includes me) pay for coins they should be shipping for free.

How can you possible use the star system if you give 5's all the time. It makes them useless. The last coin I bought on Ebay the seller had 5 for shipping time. After a week I started looking at his current feed back and finding when the auctions closed. It looks like it took about 10 days on average to get a coin from him - now how could people be giving him 5's. The person also had 5 for communication - and I did NOT receive a invoice or any other communication. And those that say they only ship once a week better hope I do not win a coin from them - especially when they end a auction on monday and only ship on saturdays.

At this point the star system means nothing and of course I still check the feedback. You can set your own rules, but at this point people are still 5 happy. Just let a seller complain to me about some rating I gave them - they better block me from bidding. Yes - I have been told by others I am a hard ..umm.. case.

So for this thread if the seller does not respond quickly and resolve the problem once it was over they would get all 1's.

Try $1.65. They just raised their rates, remember. Also, I have had a 1st class envelope take 14 days from sent (per the post mark) to receipt.

Yep - your right. I have not bought a coin off ebay since last month and I do not mail anything. As for the 14 days it probably would not bother me if I had a tracking number. With this seller I did not have anything to go buy - which makes for lousy communication. So in this case communication and shipping go hand in hand. On some sellers I can not belive they are at 4 1/2 to 5 stars with all the negative feedback they have.

I thought that I was severe in giving the stars, but you make me look like a puddy cat. Incidentally, when I start selling again, I will charge $1.75 for insurance. That will make up for the PayPal fees. Even still, when I figure the cost of supplies and mileage, I was lucky to break even when I was charging $1.50 for shipping at the old rates.

My point is that shipping time to you varies. Someone shipping UPS ground might find 7 business day shipping coast to coast. Arriving to you in 3 days is unreasonable in this case if their auction says UPS ground. Also, even though priority mail says 2-3 day service, it can take longer to arrive and that is no fault of the seller (the 2-3 day time is an *average* delivery time). If he ships it same day, and it takes a week to arrive (which *does* happen), you'll ding him which is unfair.

I don't give 5 stars if the seller makes no contact, but as far as shipping goes, unless it is just plain rediculus high I factor shipping cost into what I will bid on an item. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to give a 5 for shipping cost if they charge $7 and actuall is $1.50.
Also on cheaper items you almost have to make a little on shipping to offset auction and paypal fees.

    :pencil:
Thats just it - it is not unfair. By making "allowances" you treat the sellers who work the hardest for the customer the same as someone who does not work as hard. On the 5 star system 3 does not mean you are a bad seller, just that everything works fine or average. For a 4 you have a seller who went the extra step for the customer. And 5 is a stellar performer as far as each item goes. Whats not fair is giving a 5 to a person who charges 1.75 for insurance versus a seller who insures and ships for free. So yes if you charge me a 1.75 to cover insurance I will ding you - if the item is that low of value I probably would not bid because of the shipping charges. Do get me wrong - it does not mean I won't do business with you, but I just can't treat you the same as someone that ships for free(of course this is just an example). Also don't confuse the deal you may have gotten on a coin with shipping time, shipping cost, communication, and item as described. Just imagine what I am like with "item as described". :) My goal is to reward the truly good sellers.

To me it sounds like a bunch of you all would give a seller all 5's for a $50 coin, you were charged $7 shipping cost and took you 10 days to get, with only an invoice you got AFTER you paid for the item and no shipping notice. I understand a SELLER would want all 5's for this, but as the BUYER it just won't happen. Just keep in mind that these stars are not related to the item you purchased.

    Gets 1 or 2 stars

Not enough info. When did he ship it? I do not penalize him for a postal mistake.

Unless he does not specify shipping in the listing (I do not bid), I could care less.

If I use PayPal and ships promptly, so what. If I pay by check, 3 or less depending on his shipping time.

Not necessarily. For me it depends on how quick they ship the order. Shipping with in 24 hours of payment is 5 star shipping regardless of how quick I get it. And shipping prices, $7 is fine with me provided it's listed there and I can factor it into my auction price and he actually ships priority or something. Generally people have to ship priority mail with delivery confirmation or risk PayPal chargebacks meaning shipping costs em $5 to begin with. $7 is well within reason in such cases.

Part of the problem was he did not send you a shipping notice or an invoice and the only thing you have is a paypal receipt where you paid him. I am talking a real case here - I used a BIN for a coin, I did not receive any communication from the seller period. Shipping was specified(and in this case it was reasonable for the total price including the coin) so 10 days later I received the coin. I gave them a 1 for shipping time - how could I do anything else(I even tried to check the post mark, but it was that blurry red faded stuff stamped stuff you could not read)? So this seller got two 1's. It's not like I enjoy giving 1's, but I just can't see how I can do anything else. Out of my last 5 auctions I received two shipping notices - one from paypal shipping and one where the seller just sent me a message saying I shipped it today(and this one was two days after the auction). I know what you all are saying about blaming the seller for post office delays - but it is not my experience on the whole, and I should not have to look at post marks to see when you sent it. I actually prefer USPS over fedex and ups(don't get me started on them).

Why not? The post office screws up and you blame the seller because you are to lazy to look for a post mark? If it is the seller, go for it, but how can you assume that it is the seller because you did not look?

File a complaint with E-Bay. I got good results the one and only time I needed to resort to this.

It depends. What were the terms ? They should be spelled out in the item listing. Terms vary quite a bit from seller to seller. It's common for them to expect the buyer to pay for return postage (and insurance, if appropriate).

Well, this is perplexing .. I've never purchased anything from this person but after viewing this post I checked any other items he has for sale including yours. The problem is that the photo & desciption do show the coin as a proof - when he mentions it arrives in a blue velvet box with an eagle - but the headline is wrong so it was misleading to read as 'burnished unc'...

So I messaged him about one of his other items with the same error 'you should correct this because it is misleading and will likely lead to seller issues w/the buyer ... and he wrote back 'you know, I think you're right - that's just what the ad read when we got them ..' and he did change the header on the ad.

BUT ... the rest of his ads still have the 'burnished unc' on proof coins .. so either he didn't bother to go look and change those or only prefers to fix once caught / informed - so I individually messaged him on all of the eagles he has adv as burnished uncs but are actually proofs.

SOOOOOO ... perhaps ... where writing ebay about sellers misleading the buyers (the mass contacting we do that seems futile at times) we may want to try the same - writing the seller on each item we note as inaccurate - by 'viewing sellers other items" ... copy & paste about correcting the ad. Maybe some are true errors???

Don't jump on me.. I definitely believe they shouldn't sell what they dont know.. that 'i'm not a coin dealer I'm just selling this thing for an outrageous sum of money' excuse is horrid and that all sellers should make the buys right. I'm just offering another possibility as I see this topic a lot and the frustration seems to continue rather than resolve.

    Thanks ~

If memory serves me right, eBay will just send you to PayPal. eBay discontinued their protection system.
