is there any claim for me at all? Or am I basically defenseless against whatever he say? Would paypal refund me at all? Maybe if i sent the coins back through paypal some how? or would they claim i could have swapped the coins?

Crooks everywhere on e-bay not just selling coins. Anytime you can find a coin locally on e-bay it pays to go look at it. I have found out that most things are not what they appear when you see them in person.
I checked out a few classic cars from e-bay in person and thank god I did (junk) and some are dealers hiding as private sellers. E-bay is a dream comes true for crooks
