Always a... something... sign when the seller identifies a nickel as a dime. $23.50 for $2.25 FV of silver, plus 85 cents FV spare change? Sure!
I'd drop off that $75, then add back maybe $20 for the ounce and a half of silver. I'd assume the St. Gaudens knockoff is plated base metal; if it's silver, yay, but I doubt it.
Going back to post 19. The 1964-D is Unc. What type is the reverse? Why is there a 1965 in there? I find those every day. What is special about the nickel? On the OP, there's so much of a majority of normal pocket change It seems like a weird lot to me. Hope you made out OK.
In the photo above, I find it difficult to determine anything from the top row, the pointy S. But in the middle row, the strike of the leaves can be determined, as well as the touching or non touching A. And in the bottom row the arrows touching or not and again the strike on the leaves.
I think depending on what commems are in those stacks could make or break this lot. The 1999 Yellowstone commem dollar right on top is a better one, but many modern commem dollars basically go for melt. The lower capsuled stack on the right is half dollars, and I'm pretty sure there's only two 90% silver modern half dollar commems. I do see both of them which are featured elsewhere in the lot with the 1982 George Washington and the 1993 Bill of rights though.
It appears to be a regular old Type A. I have no idea why the non silver coins are there. Those are just going to get rolled and taken to the bank. I agree that there's a lot of normal pocket change and the lot seems weird. That's part of what had me so interested. I'm hoping I made out half as well as I think I might have. Breaking even wouldn't hurt either.
I'll be honest, I didn't even bother considering their value beyond them being potential melt value. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they're worth more than melt. I'll be sure to list all the ones I get. I concur about the half dollar commems, I included this in my math when I guessed the value.
Okay, so I'll let the cat out of the bag and say that I paid just under $250 for this. Here's my guess on what's in there; I tried to be conservative: - 55x One (1) US Dollar Coin (Years between 1922 until 2002) Morgan Dollar S Mint $13 10x silver Ikes? $50 9x silver commemorative dollars? $117 29 non silver dollars $29 - 57x Half (1/2) US Dollar Coin (Years between 1943 until 2015) 6x 90%? $36 51 non silver $25.50 $28.5 Quarters (potentially two silver quarters?) $1.57 cents First man on moon $50: 1 ounce silver $17 First man on moon $20: some silver $7 $324 total value
Melt value on the Ikes are $5.39 but I think there are some varieties to examine. Yes on the steal. I didn't think at first glance there was enough silver in there to make this deal work. Fascinating and bizarre post.
At this point I think we can say "nice score", regardless of the details of what you receive. But we still want details!
The coins arrived! First update: I found 5 silver state quarters: Texas, Iowa, Florida, Wisconsin and Michigan as well as 1x 40% bicentennial quarter. No other silver, unfortunately. The rest were a strange mix of proof and mint set quarters ranging 1970s to 2000s. Seems like these were plucked out of a collection or from sets. Based on the nickels and cents that are proofs, I’m guessing they were parts of sets. I’ll try to photograph them tomorrow. I’m not sure what to do with them besides take them to the bank.
Half dollars: 2x silver proof James Madison 2x proof and 1x George Washington 2x George Carver (AU/UNC?) 1x Booker T Washington (unc?) 1x 1893 Colombian expo circulated 1x 1943-S Walker circulated 1x 1951 Franklin circulated 2x ‘64 Kennedy 3x 40% halves (+2 1976 that I need to check for silver). 10 other Cu-Ni commemorative halves, all different I believe. The rest are random proof and lightly circulated Kennedy’s.
Put 'em straight back on eBay in a batch, with a BIN of whatever would make it worth your while, or a starting bid if you want to see how high they'll go. Looking good so far!
Thanks, unfortunately, I don't have the access to a post office to make eBay a viable option. I might try to sell here for just a little over face value to someone looking for them. It might just be easier to put them into the bank
Okay, I'm done adding up the dollars, and I was way off, but in a good way. There were only 2x Silver Ikes, 19x Commemorative Dollars, 3x Peace Dollars and 2x Morgan Dollars. Now we are at the part where I actually need help figuring out how much these are worth. I’ve already looked all these up but I don’t know how close big TPG prices are compare to actual sales. Looking each one of these up on eBay previously sold sure is an option, but I'm asking for help to save the time. I'm not looking to hold onto these as I think they're worth more than melt and my whole goal in purchasing this was to flip. Some clarifying marks in my hasty catalog: When I put (OP) I mean that it’s in the original hard plastic case that it came in and that it has a very high mint or proof state. When I put (original flimsy package) I mean it’s in the cello it comes in from the mint. I would really love to sell these all at once. There’s a coin show in Frankfurt that I’m going to next weekend; I’m considering bringing these along and trying to sell in bulk. A few questions: What do you think this is overall worth, that I could actually sell it for? Are these better sold as a group or separately? Should I hold onto all open dollars as melt value? Where should I try to sell these? eBay is not really a valid option for me because I only get to the post once every two weeks and I don’t want to lose 20% in fees. Are any of the half dollars worth more than melt? I'd like to see these for sale here on C.T. Once you decide your sale prices. Maybe list them in groups of denominations. Silver, clad, proof, etc...
