Mint set. Mint set? I thought it was proof set. Did I say mint set? Shoot..Well Coinlover, your youngest daughter is correct. You can't open a mint set without damaging the packaging. Proof set, that's a different story. Very easy. Just slide a very sharp knive along the seam and you can pop it open very easily. 59....one less than 60.
I recently picked up a beautiful 1976 proof set on ebay at 4:00 in the morning for .99 cents with $1.50 shipping. Everyone else must have been asleep at the wheel on this one!
ok now im really confused. would somebody post me pictures of a "mint" set and a"proof" set from the us mint? preferrably the "same" set? this forum has taught me ALOT in the last few weeks. and at the age of 40 i need all the schooling i can get..
Here are images of the 2008 silver proof set and the corresponding mint set. The proof sets (since 1968) have been packaged in hard plastic "lenses". The mint sets are packaged in plastic capsules mounted in a cardboard backing. The proof sets have one of each coin with an "S" mint mark. The mint sets have 2 of each coin; one with a "D" mint mark and one with a "P" mint mark.
proof set vs. mint set Though i do not have a camera i can try to explain. In the later years 1968 and up. proof sets have came in a very attractive solid plastic case that is very heavy and has a colored background. the mint sets are sealed in celophane flat packs. Mint sets are usually "p" and "d" mint marks and proof are "s".
