I'd call it a lesson learned. Let's go by the numbers game. With the added knowledge that since the Wayte Raymond collectors boards of the 30's people have been pulling the low mintage coins from their pocket change. So "Grandpa's" rolled coins (even if legit) were already culled from a shallow pool. That said, let's go pure numbers. Here are the key dates (assuming you want to strike it rich not just get a good semi-key) 1909 S VDB 1909 S 1914 D 1924 D 1922 (no D strong reverse estimated survival 15,000) I'm throwing this in as a bonus 1931 S (not insanely valuable considering people knew it was a low mintage and survival estimates are very high) These key coins amount to a total mintage of 6,903,000 The mintages of all the other years/mint marks (1909-1958) totals at 25,837,437,757 This gives you a 0.027% chance of getting a key coin! So roughly 3/100's of one percent chance.... And again, this is with the assumption that 1. All the coins are still out there (non lost or destroyed) 2. As mentioned no one has picked any of the keys from the calculated numbers 3. Even if we include semi-keys, the odds are very low and circulated lower grades are pretty affordable anyway. My opinion is that buying a scratch ticket to hopefully fund a key date purchase, will give you a better chance than getting an "unsearched roll" from an unethical (maybe not illegal) EBAY seller.
