I just looked at a Craigslist ad that is for an estate sale tomorrow that lists...coins... and I think I will go. Usually one of two things, they want sky money for crap or they have something interesting underpriced. I sometimes feel bad about buying something at highway robbery prices, but if I ever saw something truly rare, I think I would tell them.

And that would be perfectly legitimate...and many coins are from estates.

Opps. My last post was supposed to say that I pay 3¢ each for wheats.

That sure looked bad, didn't it.

Oh. One more thing. I am listing on eBay a hoard of Civil War Tokens I discovered a long time ago and am telling a story to sell them.

It, however is a true story of a true untouched since 1864 hoard.

PM me if you would like to hear it.

Am I aloud to post a link to it here?

Let's go under the guise that he isn't intentionally being deceptuve.

    Think about it....

From the seller's coin roll listings:

If they are unsearched, and grandpa died in 1975, how can a guarantee be made that they are between 1909 and 1958? How does he know these rolls weren't rolled in 1974, and grandpa just randomly put pennies in rolls with no rhyme or reason. There could be cents from 1857 to 1975 in those rolls. If any seller can guarantee what's inside of an "unsearched", "bank wrapped", anything? If something is sealed, and you weren't the one who sealed it, how can you with any certainty, guarantee what's inside? Even if my wife rolled a roll of pennies, and told me they're all 1920's, and you wanted to buy ti from me, I wouldn't guarantee that they're all '20's. I'd tell you my wife rolled them, and she said they're all '20's.

In my opinion, it's impossible for his description to be truthful.

I was about to say basically this. The sellers name alone is a big tell to not buy a thing from him.

LOL have never seen so many red flags in one listing before. This guy legitimately makes me laugh. If not completely unethical I'd actually really respect his hustle.

That said, while shady and clearly someone to avoid, if you read his entire description you received what you should have been expecting. He even says "If you are thinking you are going to strike it rich please do not bid on my auctions."

Luckily not a large sum of money here (I learned way more expensive of lessons myself...namely buying an 89CC Morgan raw within weeks of starting to collect), learn from it and move on.

I don't see how it's possible to have rolls of all wheats unless they are recently sorted and rolled. Somebody got those rolls in 1958? Every seller on eBay did this? No way.

One seller shows "original" Denver FRB and San Francisco BoA rolls.
From the pictures you can see both used the same machine to crimp the ends. Seems highly unlikely to me.

To @Cobra33. I agree with this comment. Some of the posts may appear harsh and are in a "should have known better" tone, but I'm sure 100% of the posters are just as angry about these type of scammers as you are.

I share your frustration but there probably isn't a lot you can do. Same thing happened to me in the 70's when I was a kid (Ad in Coin Age magazine). Cost me $20 and about 20% weren't even wheaties. Hopefully, it didn't cost you too much and when all said and done, you just ended up with some overpriced wheat cents. Now you get to join the large fraternity of collectors who've been burnt and curse these scammers every chance they get (like the rest of the responders)

I'd call it a lesson learned.

Let's go by the numbers game. With the added knowledge that since the Wayte Raymond collectors boards of the 30's people have been pulling the low mintage coins from their pocket change. So "Grandpa's" rolled coins (even if legit) were already culled from a shallow pool.

That said, let's go pure numbers. Here are the key dates (assuming you want to strike it rich not just get a good semi-key)
    1909 S VDB
    1909 S
    1914 D
    1924 D
1922 (no D strong reverse estimated survival 15,000) I'm throwing this in as a bonus
1931 S (not insanely valuable considering people knew it was a low mintage and survival estimates are very high)

These key coins amount to a total mintage of 6,903,000
The mintages of all the other years/mint marks (1909-1958) totals at 25,837,437,757
This gives you a 0.027% chance of getting a key coin! So roughly 3/100's of one percent chance.... And again, this is with the assumption that
    1. All the coins are still out there (non lost or destroyed)
    2. As mentioned no one has picked any of the keys from the calculated numbers
    3. Even if we include semi-keys, the odds are very low and circulated lower grades are pretty affordable anyway.

My opinion is that buying a scratch ticket to hopefully fund a key date purchase, will give you a better chance than getting an "unsearched roll" from an unethical (maybe not illegal) EBAY seller.

This is the best hobby on the planet. At the same time, what appears to be a bird's nest on the ground should be approached as a land mine with a pile of twigs on top of it.

Smart man I've seen those rolls, they look really cool but you know it's filled with a small brick of lead and two counterfeit Morgan's on the ends

It's a extremely disrespectful thing to do. I hope you never feel this pain. Thank you so much for your support and opinion. It helps me sleep at night.

Depends, if you promised me dog poop but that I just MIGHT find a diamond in it, I'd probably be disappointed, but on the other hand I was promised dog poop and I got dog poop.
