I doubt that Wall Street had anything to do with it. IMO they and the banks stand to feel pain from it too.

I think the culprits consist of another, more insidious lot.

For me, enough said, as this is starting to digress from the OP's question, and as per protocol about politics.

Before the days of manditory Paypal I used to do a bit of selling on eBay.
Then after you HAD to use Paypal I kept selling as an experiment.
I tried jacking up the shipping a little just to cover the fees.
I think most sellers who have high shipping charges are just trying to offset the selling fees.
I tried starting the auctions at a price I could live with but the bids were very few. They want to see 99 cent starting bids and free or $1.50 shipping.
What made me quit eBay was a Franklin half dollar I sold. I bought the coin for $4.50 and listed it at 99 cents with $1.50 shipping.
The coin sold for less than $5 and it cost me something like $2.39 to mail it.
So I figured out it just wasn't worth it to use eBay anymore.
You try to jack up the shipping and it has a negative reaction.
Set a reasonable shipping charge and you can get nailed on the coin itself.
