Oh, the plot does thicken. He's newly listed a number of coins, this time as replicas (and in the Replicas section) -- but the photos still clearly show that they are NOT stamped "copy", as required by eBay policy. Anybody want to join me in reporting them? long list of not at all questionable coins He's got at least 12356 positive feedbacks, one, I'm ashamed to say, from me. He does a ton of business, and probably figures eBay wouldn't think of interfering with his revenue stream. Again, we'll see. (Hoo, boy, just checked his recent feedback -- looks like I'm not the only one who's been taken in. )
Why does this coin make me suspicious....the date doesn't look right for this coin to be genuine. Edit: I am almost certain that this coin is fake.
I have read the whole thread, and I don't feel bad about posting the comment. I'm not the only one who thinks this coin is a fake.
That was some gentle sarcasm; we've all concluded it's a fake. We've moved on to dealing with the guy who's continuing to sell these fakes on eBay. I'm thinking that some of the auctions I reported last night are gone, although I didn't keep track of the links -- I think he had 24 US coins up last night, and now there are only 16, with no new "completed auctions" appearing during that interval. Fourteen of these are listed as replicas, but aren't stamped "COPY", which violates eBay's policy; two aren't indicated as replicas at all, but I wouldn't trust them even at face value. If you have an eBay account and a few spare minutes, please feel free to report his remaining counterfeit auctions. I reported some as "Fraudulent Listings -> You suspect that a listing is fraudulent you didn't bid", which gets routed to SafeHarbor, and some as "Prohibited -> Other prohibited -> Other prohibited", which gets routed to Community Watch. I think it was the former that got results last night -- I just wasn't sure which categorization was most appropriate.
Thanks to anybody who's been reporting this guy's auctions -- at this point, he's down to only 4 US coins, a couple of which might actually be legitimate. (Not that I intend to bid on them, of course.) The decision from eBay is supposed to come within 72 hours of the request for review, which would be early Saturday morning. I'm hoping to hear something tomorrow. Stay tuned...
Well, I still haven't heard back from eBay on the final disposition of the case -- but the seller is now Not a registered user. It makes me sad, in a way -- he'd actually been registered just nine days longer than me, since September of 1998, and had over 12000 feedbacks. But he really, really wasn't getting the message; even after another buyer negged him twice for this latest batch of counterfeits, he was still listing new questionable coins. I guess it's for the best. I feel a little sad, but I sure don't feel guilty. So, it looks like I'll get my money back, and get to keep that nice BS-50 for my Walker collection.
Finally got the resolution this afternoon, 60 hours after the original "within 72 hours" promised by eBay. Full refund (including shipping), no further obligation to the (ex-)seller. So I've got my money back, and my counterfeit example. I do think I'll keep my eyes open for a do-it-yourself slab. Off to notify a couple of other unlucky winners that, yes, they might still be able to get their money back.
Hah -- just got a reply from one of the other unlucky winners. He opened a case this afternoon, and had his refund within an hour! I hope the rest of them do the same. It almost makes me wish I'd bought more from the guy -- it would've been that many more fakes out of circulation.
Unless you buy 100'000's of fakes, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be putting a dent in the Chinese counterfitting operations. Sad to say... Anyway, I'm really glad that worked out for you. I know how frustrating it is to see sellers get away with this. Thanks for keeping this thread updated. It gives hope to those who have been ripped off, and definitely raises awareness to potential buyers. Knowledge is power!
Trying to get the Chinese fakes out of circulation these days is like trying to play Whack-a-Mole with the moles on steroids.
Don't feel bad. I would bet money that the person using that account is not the original owner. Pop may have died and a scumbag son or nephew started using his account. Heck, pop may be on vaction, and come home to find his account closed!
Well, we're a lot of buyers and potential buyers. Just apply our mass on the objective. It's like setting up an overwatch position on a prairie dog town and playing whack-a-mole at a hundred yards with a rifle of your choice. Hey, them things tear up farm land and need to be gotten rid of. Don't feel bad about getting rid of a scumbag seller.
Man, that's a hard one... take out a town of prairie dogs or take out a town of scum bag chinese coin dealers
