But... he's a Power Seller, so he can't do anything wrong.

Seriously, I'd report him to USPS, PayPal, and eBay without hesitation. There is no reasonably excuse for something like this.

I sent him a message asking why that one coin required authorization to bid on. I asked him if my 100% feedback met his standards and instead of replying he ended the auction.

Block them in what way? Is there something on Ebay where I can block seeing auctions from certain sellers. That would be cool - stop seeing all the auctions from these sellers would probably cut down on how much looking I have to do. :)

I meant - to place the seller on your Blocked Bidder List. I've been told they can't leave (retalitory ;)) FB to an individual who has blocked them...

I hate too be the bearer of bad news, but the only way you are going too get your money back is to file a dispute with paypal, and this can take a min. of 30 days. Everyones suggestions are good but while you are trying them you are still out $144.27. I have had the same problem with a seller and I try going through ebay and the USPS, but the only way I got back my money was to file a dispute with paypal.

As an update, the seller just refuses to respond to any of my emails. So I have left the seller negative . I'm sure I'll get the old retalitory negative, but so be it. It was the right thing to do.

I am going through paypal and ebay at this point and will provide an update when I hear from them. The reality is though that I am only out $7.40 in shipping. I believe I am out the value of the coin, but I don't think that argument carries the day.

I am still considering going to the USPS and complaining there. I guess I'll see how the seller reacts from here.

On an even more important note, thank you to everyone who emailed the seller and inquired about the whole situation. I think the seller got the point.

    Edited for spelling.

I'd like to know if this is true, or it's just something you heard.

I haven't tried it myself but maybe if you ask the question in a seperate post... A member of this forum once posted that it works.

    Good Luck

    Update

To everyone who has been following this, I have an update to how this scam works. This is what I have pieced together:

    1. Seller posts a listing on Ebay low price-no reserve.

    2. Item sells well below market value.

    3. Buyer pays through PayPal.

    4. Seller allegedley prints off a shipping label through PayPal with a tracking number but does not drop the item in the mail.

    5. When viewing the tracking number on usps.gov, item is shown as something like: "The Sender has electronically notified the USPS that your item will be shipped". Although the exact wording may vary from this.

    6. After several weeks, Buyer notifies seller that the item has not arrived.

    7. Seller offers to file the insurance claim and refund the amount less shipping, citing that the item was lost in the mail.

    8. Buyer accepts, gets refund less shipping and insurance.

    9. Several weeks or months pass and Seller relists item with only a small chance that the original Buyer will ever spot the relist.

    10. Seller hopes to get a higher price this time around or simply collect the shipping/insurance money and try again later.

I'm still in the process of figuring out all the details. In my case, the seller is claiming that a tracking number was issued via PayPal shipping, but PayPal doesn't have a record of that (nor do I). Also, just because a tracking number was issued doesn't mean the item was sent.

This whole thing has been a learning experience for me to say the least.

I'll update further when the Ebay and PayPal people get back to me.

Yes, that is good news but too bad that is only one of many that is running the same scam or some forum of it. I just got back my money from paypal after dealing with a seller that shut down her selling on ebay. I won a auction for a 2002 mint proof set for $21.00, I paid for it and after 10 days I did not receive the item I try emailing the seller and found that the seller was no longer register with ebay as a seller and the seller would not respond to any of my email. I file a complaint with paypal and 30 days later I got my money back. That is all good but I think that the seller should pay a lot more then just returning the money, some kind of find should be enforce for this type of action. A seller shoud have too be bonded to sell any thing on ebay, that would stop a lot of this crap.

I was thinking the same thing. Of course, none of my complaining has worked. Ebay flat out doesn't care. I am outside the PayPal window but they claim they will still try to help. I filled out the postal form online, but they don't give you any feedback.

It looks like this guy may just get away with it.

A co-worker suggested I try to complain to my state's insurance commissioner. I paid for insurance on this coin and it was allegedly "lost" and the seller paid out the claim minus my premium. Since I paid for insurance and it was represented that a claim was filed, it's possible this is an angle I can pursue.

I sure took it in the shorts on the feedback with this guy, but I still believe it was the right thing to do.

I'll update everyone when something happens.

Hay sf34flier don't give up so quick PayPal may still help you get back some or all of you money. But the Insurance is only good for the sender not the receiver so I don't thing that will help you, but I maybe wrong you need to check with the post office. If PayPal can not help you because of the time, you can always file a civil suit in your county but do this after you go after him with a legal suit. File a police report and make sure that the DA office gets involved.
As far as the feedback you can file a mutal withdraw on the feedbacks which will remove both feedbacks.
    Good Luck

    Not completely correct!

The "withdrawn" feedback doesn't affect your feedback score, but it remains visible to people checking your feedback, with a statement of withdrawal. It will drop off the first page after a while, but anyone using the negative/neutral checking site www.toolhaus.org will see it.

Wait a minute, hold on here! I sell on ebay and I sure as heck don't want to be bonded.
If there is any expense involved who do you think will pay extra in the long run?
What ever happened to the old saying "Buyer beware" ?
Sure there are a lot of greedbags and shysters. But so are they present in the real world.
Let's not get carried away here. Something should be done I agree.
But to punish the honest sellers is unfair. Ebay charges enough fees already.

    Jim,

I was looking through the Seller's "Completed Listings" and actually found where he had previously re-listed the coin and ended the auction early on November 1st which is prior to the re-listing that he/she ended early on November 6th!

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1890-PCGS-MS64-...QQihZ004QQcategoryZ139811QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It is one thing to end one auction saying that it was in error and start another one with the correct pictures but to end two which have the same coin in the same PCGS holder early for the same reason definitely appears fishy! He or She was apparently trying to cover their tracks but they still got caught in a lie and scam.

I would take copies of all of the information to the Post master of the local Post office and file a claim in person. Also, I would file a claim of fraud with the local District Attorney's Office and call the nearest FBI Office since it appears that this Seller may have committed Mail Fraud in just stating that he/she mailed the coin and that it was lost even if he/she never really mailed it or not. It is worth a try to explore all angles and keep pressing PayPal as they will at the least, freeze this Seller's Account making life very difficult for him or her especially if they have a significant amount of funds still in the account of which they might need.

    Good luck...Frank

As a seller, you of all people should want ebay to get more involve with disputes between buyers and sellers. Ebay needs to revise their system and have more control over what is going on on their forum and not pass problems off to someone like paypal. It is not hard to figure out that a seller or a buyer for that matter is trying to ran a scam to rip someone off.

The problem with "Buyer Beware" is that like everything else on ebay there is no control. We all know that if a buyer give a neg. feedback they will recieve a neg feedback if it is warrented or not so the buyer just plays the game. The seller has a problem if the buyer miss read the auction. So the feedback only works if everyone is honest and they don't make a mistake.

We can debete this matter all day but the facts are that ebay need to come up with a better system that will protect both the sellers and the buyers, and as sellers and buyers we need to force ebay to do something about it.
