Do you have it in hand yet??

This might not be easy... but can you get a straight on shot of the side of the coin in the areas where the rim looks funky? This will tell us a lot.

I'm on the fence on this one. It could be a very unusual struck-through error. However, if the design is warped (rather than simply obscured) that would indicate tampering outside the Mint. A significant loss of weight would also lead to suspicions of tampering. A far more interesting (if remote) possibility is a badly deformed die (a whopping soft die error). The distortion of the letters of AMERICA is intriguing. However, the deep cavity at the base of the Memorial is seemingly incompatible with this notion.

I'd love to examine it at some point. Real or fake, it would make a wonderful subject for a Collector's Clearinghouse column.

Mike your opinion is getting close to matching up with my own opinion of this coin. this would have probably been my coin if I had been on ebay when it went off auction , but it was probably meant to be that way. This is about the only type coins I'm interested in now, I do still get some common errors if someone wants to about give them away. my collection of the usual stuff is starting to make my home look like one of the hoarders on the TV show. LOL

take another look at the places on the reverse side of it that looks like a extra part of the left side of the building and a couple or parts of extra letters and see if you think like I'm thinking.

Although as you and me knows it is about impossible to tell much on these unusal ones without having them in our hands. would you be interested in either one of my unusal coins to do a story on if they are declared genuine mint errors by someone we both trust? We have had our little problems over the years but i'm sure we can always work them out as adults like we always do.

Mike I don't think anyone has used a dremel on this OP's coin since the letters goes down into the recessed area and thru the pollars and colum of the memorial building but thinner thru the building. This is why I almost knew it was a unusal error the minute I saw it.

Sir, your insight is highly regarded on this forum and I would not be averse to your examining it. I sure hope it gets here soon. Hope they didn't forget how to drive in the snow! :D I am honored that you would consider it for an article, and would be happy to have you do it, provided you can send me a signed copy of Coin World with the article in it ;) :thumb: Thank you for your continued interest. I will post good pics ASAP. Feel free to PM me if you wish. -Andy

I borrowed another pic from the auction after looking at it again. I'm seeing impressions of parts of the memorial and the N in cent that are rotated about 10 degrees or so.

Mike I just thought of something you may be interested in using for a great story. I have two awesome and totally different variety coins that have been confirmed by me and someone else as having been created from the same die pair. I have never heard of this ever happening before where the dies were confirmed as creating two different awesome varietys . If you are interested ask our friend Mr. Neff and he has the photos of them and you are welcome to the photos.I'm not going to bother silentviolets thread anymore and give the rest of you a chance to weigh in on it. Rascal, when asked our opinions on a coin, we simply do what we are asked- give our honest opinions. Whether this opinion is what you were hoping to hear isn't our problem... It is just what is likely an accurate diagnoses. If an OP, whether it be you or another member, is confident with their personal appraisal of a coin and are certain it is an accurate one, what is the point of creating a thread asking others for their opinions? (Statement not directed at the OP of this particular thread)

... No one is "hounding" the newbies, Rascal, we are simply providing them with information they have asked of us.

Also, I like to share my excitement and pics with people who appreciate it, as members of this forum can and do. Nobody I know personally is into the hobby. Sure, I inspire everyone I know to check their pocket change, but they don't know what to look for. I really can't talk to anyone about coins without the inevitable "Here, check my change for me." I consider myself to be "Intermediate" as far as knowledge of numismatics. I've disagreed with others before over coin pics I've posted but still managed to do so repectfully. LostDutchman may remember one I posted about a "train track cent". Disagreement is half of debate. The other half is presenting your arguements. As far as this particular coin goes, I still reserve my official opinion. I've speculated enough. I'm impatiently awaiting the mail which probably won't get here for 1-2 hours. Hope it's in there!

My gut was PMD but the warping of AMERICA has me intrigued. Also, the obverse seems completely normal. If something post mint hit the coin to make an impression that deep, I would think the obverse would be deformed somewhere.

Please send this to Mike and report the results back.

From the new pictures... I would have to say that my original assessment of PMD was probably not correct. This coin looks to have been made this way... I just can't say what caused it.
