are you saying all of your fees can just be "hidden" in your S&H fee? You would think ebay could check for that too and start charging a percentage of your S&H fee. They'll probably do that next year.
I've been registered on EBay and Yahoo for about the same length of time. I have an EBay feedback rating of 195, with well over 300 individual positives, and a Yahoo rating of 19, with about 30 transactions. Gee, I wonder if the breadth of selection available on each venue has anything to do with that difference? BTW I did find one coin I wanted on Amazon, a couple of years ago.
I've been on ebay since '98 - Amazon even before that. And Yahoo about the same time. Back then they were all about the same. Not anymore. Now I remember my Amazon login because I use it for books - but Yahoo - it's been so long since I've been there I aint got a clue.
one of the main reasons ebay is popular is because of its layout. amozon has a poor auction layout, its more complicated and in a smaller font size and poor colours. ebays basic listing fees may sound cheap but add a few bells and whistles and it will match a traditional auction any day.and you will still be burdened with the work involved in listing. and if your item dont sell these fees still count. and the people may not pay at the end of the auction or they may charge back or defraud. i think a site that sets a listing fee only would be right, end of the day its the same bandwidth/work to do this for them.this would stop all the junk being listed over and over again like many sites.no selling charge just a listing charge.this would also encourage people to sell on the site with better items.
I joined ebay in 1998 as well. I'd like to see what their fees were back then. I know it had to be a lot cheaper. It was like 3%. This was before paypal too. Which meant buying off of ebay required you to send check or money order to the seller. Those were the good old days back before paypal. Never again though! Does ebay raise fees every year? This is the first year I've noticed it being so drastic.
Here's something nice from January 18, 2002: A little pricing announcement from ebay... $0.01 - $25.00 Old Price= 5.00% New Price= 5.25% $25.01 - $1000.00 Old Price= 2.5% New Price= 2.75% $1000.01 and up Old Price= 1.25% New Price= 1.5% Now doesn't that seem like a nice friendly way to raise prices? By only a quarter of a percent. They are just being extremely greedy! 5.25% to 8% come on, that's terrible!
If I sell something for (US)$25 to someone outside of US/Canada, with a $9.99 start and the buyer pays with paypal, my costs: ebay listing: 0.35 ebay ending: 2.00 (8%) paypal: 1.28 (3.9%+0.30) paypal exchange to C$ charge: 1.25 (about 5%) Total fees incurred: $4.88, almost 20%. Do I need to comment?
Ebay's fees will probably continue to go up until their profit is high enough to bring in a real competitor. I view what collecting was before the internet and ebay to what cars were before GM. Old Henry Ford imposed limitiation, you can have your car in any color that you want as long as it's black. GM came along and said: you can have your motor car in any color you want. The internet and ebay did the same thing. From collecting limitations to no limitations. No matter how specific a topic you can think of, you can probably do it on ebay. If you don't like the popular areas of collecting or the grading games that go with it, you really can vote with your feet thanks to "The Bill" and ebay. I suppose their fees will always be an annoyance to sellers. But really, I don't think I'd complain too much if they started to charge buyers as well. I think they probably will sooner or later. And it will still be worth it to me to have unlimited choices. FUN SHOW TODAY!!!!!!
Options Yes there are other sites with auctions, but eBay is where we all go. Can you imagine if each of us that belonged to a group or forum convinced our group or forumto go to another auction, than that site would be the dream place for us. eBay is successful because we go there and we support them. I have used some other sites very successfully and obtained coins a bit less expensive because I was not bidding against so may others. Richard
Some day people will remember that it is the ones spending the money who have the power over these things, If no one would place an auction for a 2 week period ebay would also remember who butters their bread, But it will never happen,,
It seems that many of you are missing this important line: "Final Value Fee for Store Inventory items will change as follows:" (emphasis mine) Then it goes on to talk about the 5.25% to 8% jump. Basically this will mostly affect people with an actual eBay Storefront. Those of us who only list items without that storefront will still be charge the current fees. What it means to me is that I won't be making a jump to having an eBay store that I was considering, I'll just stick to the old way. CJD
I did read that too fast. The 5.25% to 8% does only affect storefront users. I'm not as upset as I was when I thought it was for people with regular listings. I wonder why ebay is giving storefront users such a hard time?
My guess is that eBay figures those who already have a storefront are less likely to pack up and go elsewhere than those of us who are just "playing" on eBay. I like making a little money on eBay, but it certainly isn't my livlihood. It seems that eBay is banking on their big sellers all (or almost all) staying since it IS their livlihood. my 2¢ CJD
