I guess we all need to start listing our coins and currency under "collectibles...other banking and insurance memorabilia."

For those of you in a position to take advantage of the Kroger fuel-points scheme (paging @jwitten), I just noticed this offer in my Kroger e-coupons: 4x fuel points on Visa, MasterCard or American Express gift cards. This is remarkable, as I believe these cards ordinarily don't earn fuel points at all. They should be perfectly fine as payment for ANY eBay purchase (that also accepts PayPal).

Two catches: they're only available in denominations of $25, $50 and $100, and the offer expires TOMORROW, Saturday, October 15. I only saw the offer today; don't know when it started. You'll need to log in with your Kroger account to activate the offer.

I'm going to take a close look at the fine print on the cards tonight, and if there's nothing prohibitive, I'm going to stock up. Heck, I can use these cards for groceries, gas, or anything else, so I might as well go whole hog. Assuming I can get 15 gallons into the Honda or 20 into the Sienna, that's $6 or $8 savings on gas for every $100 worth of gift cards. Plus approximately 1% back on the credit card that I use to pay for the gift cards. I'll happily accept a 9% discount on my consumer spending across the board...

I might look into it, thanks! I was just thinking today about all the savings I was missing out on since ebay gift cards can't be used for coins anymore.

And I would've gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling... $5.95 activation fees. I thought this sounded a little too good to be true; if the cards can be "used anywhere you'd use a MasterCard/Visa", what would prevent one from emptying the shelf, buying the first one, activating it, using it to pay for the next one, activating it, using it to pay for the next one... except, of course, shame.

Actually, I could just about find that worthwhile -- assuming I can fill the van with 20 gallons each time, I'd be coming out $2 ahead for each iteration. Really, hardly worthwhile, though. Now, if I had a vehicle that could hold the 35-gallon limit, that would be a different story.

When using Kroger fuel points I take my SUV and one of our other cars up at the same time. That way I can use the full 35 gallons! :) With this method, I can save $35 in one shot (if I have the full dollar off).

EDIT - On a side note, watch the "transfer a prescription offer", easy to do and they give you 10,000 pts ($1 off per gallon). For me it was like a free $35!

Just got a promotional coupon from eBay. Looks like it is not good on "Coins and Currency", but can be used on stamps and collectibles. My last coupon was good for coins, but not this one. Maybe everybody needs to start listing under "Banking and Insurance collectibles".

I just used my $29. Ebay Bucks on a coin purchase (1858 Sicilian 120 Grana coin). So as of now you can still use them for coin purchases.

Let's hope they let us continue to use them.
