That was an OK deal. This is the best I've done though. I found this coin about maybe 6 weeks ago...offered raw for 150 dollars. It was a "buy it now" listing. I got it back from NGC last week. I paid nearly as much for the slab as I did for the coin. Been collecting "off and on" for 40 years and never found a coin I felt was worthy of a slab.....until this one. Nightowl
Nightowl, great piece (the Seated $.) That Peace $ is amazing, compared to the scan. Hey tell us how much they cost so we can drool!
The values are easy enough to decipher from online guides and auction results, so I'll leave that up to the discretion of the reader whether or not they want to look up the values. The difference in value between an NGC AU58...and a PCGS MS60 is quite significant though, and I halfway expect that whoever buys this coin will crack it out, send it to NCS for conservation, and then crack it out of the NCS slab and send it to PCGS. If it's true that PCGS is more lenient than NGC and it were to be returned a PCGS MS60....it's value nearly doubles. Nightowl
Here ya go: It's a Capped Die error. And I got it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270482649884&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT Ribbit Ps: I'm looking for a Brockage of this to complete the error, if anyone knows where one is.
Here are my pics. Can't you tell? It is a 1954-S NGC 67 red, but for $14 including shipping, I don't think I can do too poorly. In case you missed it, he did not post any pictures. I will when I receive it.
I'm not sure that that's true if the corrosive agent has been thoroughly removed and neutralized (e.g., if base, rinse with mild acid; if acid, rinse with mild base). Remember, the TPG must, in effect, guarantee the outcome, and this stuff ain't rocket science.
And while I've been burned once or twice on the Bay, I still buy a lot of raw coins there. Here are some examples of wins I've had over the past few years that I've been collecting this series: That's for starters. Please forgive the soft focus on some of these shots. I'm still perfecting my coin photography technique. I have at least a dozen or so more that I could post. While I won't bore you with how much I paid for each of these, suffice it to say that I got some pretty good deals. For example, I got the 62-S in a set of 5 coins for which I paid $65. I should be able to sell 3 of them for that much (one was an 1856 Large Date dime in VF-30 or so). If I can do that, then I will have gotten the 62-S, basically, for free. Not a bad deal!
Thanks, here was the original auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300344925972&ssPageName=ADME:L:COSI:US:1123 I sold the Gettysburg alone for $465
Ah,another no picture gambler. I found a listing for a 1922 Peace, uncirculated according to the seller, but no pic. The bid was at $9.50 when I found it so put in my max bid at$11.50 which was melt at the time.I figured not much risk unless it was fake. I ended up winning at$10.30. This is what showed up in the mail.
This was my 'took a gamble' highlight: an 1796 Large Cent listing with only an obverse picture which was pretty small and dark, and which I had to lighten up to be able to see the date at all. I took a gamble on this one, and decided to go for it. I was very pleased when I had it in-hand: Much better than the picture on eBay, with a pleasant reverse and a smooth planchet. It turned out to be a rare variety as well, an S-105, which is a Rarity 5 die pairing. I was happy...........
I said I would post the pics when it arrived. I am a little late, but here they are. It is clean and has lots of luster, but I am not too sure it is really full red. It is beginning to tone a bit - rather prettily, I think.
Looks full red to me....Nice coin. This is probably the worst picture I've ever bought from, and it's the most money I've ever spent for a single coin. Hopefully...the tape residue is easily removed and this is a business strike. I'll be sending this one for grading....probably PCGS. I have to join one or the other (NGC), and as long as the perception is that PCGS coins sell higher...or are more popular, I think that's the route I'll go. I'll have this in hand by friday...and will post pics after the acetone has done its work. melting away the cellophane tape residue. I also bought this Flying eagle for 34 dollars...from these bad pictures. Nightowl
From the eBay seller photos I saw some telltale signs of good color on reverse, but the obverse photos looked really bad, so I wasn't sure if this was the kind of coins when one side was great and one side was a dog. Coin was a fantastic buy at $55 IMHO. Seller: My Pics:
