You should take your time and do some research yourself on this one. If your planning on collecting these or any other coin type, education on grading will save you money and anxiety. For me its the great thing about all this now, learning more I mean. The Red Book is a great resource for basic coins facts and figures but not price. Market sets the price. Your knowledge will determine how well you deal. Spend what you can afford and better what you feel comfortable doing. If you feel your spending way to much, you probably are. Keep on Collecting!!! Hey, with free shipping you did just fine, probably about average retail. If it does have full bell lines, then you did even better. Pick a series you like, buy some books and learn all you can about grading, pricing and spotting cleaned coins. Most importantly, enjoy.
I don't think you made a bad purchase at all. $20 for an MS-63ish Franklin isn't anything to hang your head about. One thing though, if the seller was serious about this coin having FBL (full bell lines), then he should have take better pictures of the bell lines. If this was important to you as a buyer, you could have requested a better picture of the bell lines. While you're at it, you should go ahead and buy a Dansco book for Franklins and put the whole set together. It will only cost a few hundred bucks as long as you drop down to EF for the tougher dates.
Its ok that you paid a few more bucks than you should have but as long you like the coin is what matters. I would pay a few exttra dollars if it was a coin that I really liked. At least your learning and you at one of the best places to do so. Nickeldude
