I have some slabbed PCGS 70 silver eagles (proof and unc).. I know silver eagles pretty well but is there any way to prove they are real?
Thanks for that update. I have yet to have seen one of these reviewed but nothing surprises me anymore.
Forgeries continue to pop up on Ebay every day. Some are fairly pricey. The PCGS and to a lesser extent the very scarce NGC forgeries often bring in large sums. Virtually all of the following counterfeits were eventually removed by Ebays T&S. Hopefully the duped buyers were properly informed. Chinese coins are hugely popular among the counterfeiters due to their growing popularity. Here are a few recent examples. 1) Sold for $10,475 July 1st. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5918566058/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5918004821/in/photostream/ 2) Sold for $2,125 June 19th. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5890611621/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5890610003/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5891174404/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5890606685/in/photostream/ 3) Sold for About US $6,486 June 19th. NGC themselves confirmed this forgery. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5860716598/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5860155765/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5860706260/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5860152185/in/photostream/ 4) Sold July 17th for about US $1,684 http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5944693563/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5945248796/in/photostream/ Many more counterfeit types are listed by sets. Just click unto any coin for enlargement. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/sets/ Or you can use the Photostream. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/
Wow, those are very deceptive counterfeits. Very troubling. Yet, if the fake is that good, why not just enjoy it, eh? :hail: It would give you the same satisfaction............... until you tried to sell it. :foot-mouth:
I guess its really no surprise but a few Chinese forgery sellers are now openly selling counterfeit PCGS Gold Pandas with quantity discounts. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/6002227976/in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/6001677639/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/5999785797/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/6000331458/in/photostream/ Counterfeits grouped into sets. http://www.flickr.com/photos/coinforgeryebay/sets/ I believe many of these Asian websites are out of the reach of US authorities but it would seem something could and should be done. With ever improving quality of fakes, both raw and slabbed, the long term harm to the US coin industry could be very damaging.
To PCGS's credit, they are trying to combat counterfeiting: http://www.pcgs.com/Articles/Detail/6850 I still don't know why they don't photocertify all their coins (like NGC) :headbang: g.
I agree that PCGS does need to follow NGC's lead with an archive service. I am very surprised that PCGS has not developed a new holder since the first appearance of PCGS counterfeits on the market. IMO, NGC 's development of a new holder was crucial in combating NGC fakes. I have yet to see a NGC counterfeit of this new holder (circa 2008) and the majority of NGC coins on the market now use this holder. In my estimation PCGS represents at least 90% of the fake TPG slabs out there. One rarely sees a fake NGC or ANACS slab anymore.
