That right there is like saying----I know the way to the store is down the road to the left but I'm going to turn right---if you don't like to lose don't gamble. Speedy
satootoko: All people who aren't smart enough to read. If I buy the coins, and I don't like what I find, I'll simply send it back. And if I can't, I'll report them. Also, what are the chances of getting a BAD order? Look at all the good feedback. There's a fairly good chance I'll get at least one worthwhile coin. I know I sound like a naive child, but if you look at the odds it seems like a good chance to take.
Never eat a dinner called Moms Never play poker with a man called Doc & never buy unsearched coins. At least so far this has been my experience.
Such hate towards eBay. Searched coins are more expensive, and you won't gain anything from them unless you sit around for ten years.
Royall - you don't have to follow our advice, but you did ask for it. Everyone responding to your inquiry has expressed an opinion based on his or her own experience. Just think about how much experience you've had, and how much the responders have, and then draw your own conclusions and choose your own path. I buy a lot of coins from EBay and I haven't expressed any hatred toward that venue, nor do I see hatred in the other postings. What I do see is harsh criticism of one particular class of EBay sellers, largely based on the posters' experience - both their own and that described to them by others. Also, there are many forum members who are collectors, not coin/bullion investors, and they gain far more from getting genuine coins at reasonable prices than they do from picking up investment "bargains". Bottom line - to each his own. I've found my own, and only you can find yours.
I'm attempting to make my decision based on the opinions of the more experienced, because I don't have any knowledge on the subject of the quality concerning unsearched lots. I see based on the experiences of the more knowledgeable members, buying lots like these is a gamble and not suggested. I'll get a second opinion before I make my final decision on whether I agree. Also, you're smilies seem to be coming up as URLs.
My friend, I suspect that I have been collecting coins longer than you have been alive (57 years); and I've been on EBay for more than 7 years, with something over 500 of my 800+ transactions involving coins. If you aren't seeing my smilies, your browser settings must be blocking them, and there's not much I can do about that.
Royall, satootoko is completely correct. Among all of the forum members here thats collected for a long time, Im sure we have at least a few hundred years of combined experience. All of us have tried to discourage you from wasting your money. Not all of us have experience with Ebay, but we all have experience with what makes sense. I've dealt with Ebay for about 4 years and I tend to stay away from deals that sound too good to be true and ads that are "hyped" with the words "thousands of unsearched coins" or include pictures of very expensive coins that you couldnt possibly have a chance to recieve like a gold double eagle . Its your money but, you asked for our opinions. Good Luck!!
Royall, pay attention to the experienced... In the long run, you'll know what they mean.. I'm very much benefited from these posts and so many times I escaped from some crafty dealers -- the latest being when I tried to buy a Tribute Penny from a dealer. Fortunately for me, I posted the pictures of the coin before I bought it and it was proved a dud... :smile :secret:
Royall, It's about 32.00 bucks for this auction. It ain't gonna put you in the poorhouse to give it a try. Heck, it isn't all that expensive of a lesson as far as coin purchases go. You might as well get you feet wet and make the purchase if that is what you decide to do. It may actually prevent you from making a much more expensive mistake later. I think you also characterized yourself incorrecty when you called yourself a gambler. You are more accurately a treasure hunter and might want to consider buying yourself a metal detector and start searching old farms and abandon church sites. If you live in an area that lends itself to that kind of activity, you'd have a blast.
Royal I buy lots on a fairly regularbasis and not just coins LOL and I find that as a rule you will break even but dont go into it expecting to make a fortune LOL cus you wont. I have bought a few mixed US lots and found some nice bits posted a few scans of some of the recent cents in a earlier post :smile My main bit of advice would be if you want a bit of fun and to spend a few hours sorting coins then go for it :thumb: De Orc :kewl:
Yea, if it wasn't for the moneyback guarantee, I would have stopped talking about it a while ago. I'm just waiting until they relist the auction so I can buy it.
