The person I was talking with about the ebay group didn't actually specify when the group was active and I can't remember the exact wording, but it was something like, not to awful long ago there was a group that etc..... They didn't make it seem like it was a LONG time ago, but days turns into weeks, weeks to months, months to years, to decades LoL! One think the person thought possible was sells of phonies at the time was still revenue to ebay, they get their fee's from the sale, if its a phony coin that gets by they make money. And I don't think on a reverse transaction that ebay refunds their fees. I take it that ebay is still somewhat protected because they still have the counterfeit listing rules & guidelines and a way to report listings that violate the rules.
At the time though they actually had a special link for reporting fakes or questionable items in the Coins section that went directly to the investigating group and it even had a text box that let you explain why you thought it was fake, diagnostics etc. and you had up to 10,000 characters for your explanation. It worked very well and often you could get fakes pulled in less than an hour. Was very sorry to see it go.
So, how do you all here handle something like this one, post it and let whatever members that's interested message the seller and put in report. Or do the member here just take care of them on their own and not post them on the forum? https://www.ebay.com/itm/194885927765?hash=item2d601b4355
CT members have making posts about fakes/counterfeits on ebay for as long as CT has existed, and they still do make them on a fairly regular basis. And then the members who wish to report them to ebay - do so. Just do a search of the forum using ebay and fakes as your key words and you'll find more posts of that nature than you care to read.
Thanks, we got the listing above taking down. I'm also on another coin forum and there its COMMON for me to start threads about phony Lincoln's (09SVDB's & 14-D's mainly) actually I just broke 125 threads for phony Lincoln's. In brief the how I got started doing this around in August of 2020 (before I was on any coin forum's) I had worked my Lincoln collection down to needing the 09SVDB, so I save money did things for extra money and I thought I was ready to buy one, bla.....bla.... and I found one, made what I thought was a great deal of $500.00 (a direct purchase not ebay) well this coin is what I ended up with, Well, through a series of events I found out is was a fake!! In an attempt to get my money back I cut the coin in half and returned it, a year later in total I $200.00 back. I still need the coin for my collection, but I had taken a financial hit that I couldn't afford at the time. Bla....bla............. I pretty much gave up. Well I got on a coin forum got some interest back in getting my bucket list coin and I took a LONG DEEP dive into learning how to spot a fake or counterfeit 09SVDB, in fact about a year I spent going through daily ebay searches of the SVDB's trying to find a phony, I'd post pictures ONLY of the coin for forum member review, and if they concluded it to be fake I'd then post the link to it. Well, needles to say in that year of doing just SVDB's I got better & better at knowing MOST phonies. I thing took the dive and bought me another SVDB. But so much time had went by for me doing daily ebay searches for these phony coins that I became a habit that's hard to stop. So, now another year as went by after I bought my SVDB and I'm still looking, I also added the 14-D to my ebay searches. I'm not very good at spotting other fake coins, but the SVDB & 14-D keep me busy LoL! Another thing I've found is lots of times the true scammers of counterfeits will in many cases put up listings for the 09SVDB, and when I post it on the forum some of the other member will do a quick check of the seller's other items and find lots of other listed phony coins. If I end up moving completely to this forum I was just wanting to know how the members here pursued these listings, there are times when I'll find two in a day. Sometimes if I get two many back to back I'll just take care of them on my own. Thanks for the information
