thank you all very much for the comments and siggestions....very informative indeed....and i think I will go w/ the max bid plus a couple (jus to make sure im not outbid by a buck!)....and for now i can see pros an cons to snipeing.....in a way like a laser tag game.....jus when i get the vest on an lit wham i get shot by the 8 yearold!....I suppose its a system than can be as easily abused as readily used....thanx again.....all very cool people here......Jimmy

Thinking that means you don't understand the whole auction process.

The proxy bid made by that sniper who won at 50¢ over your bid may have been much, much larger.

If an auction draws at least two bids, the hammer price is always, always, always set by the "back" bidder, not the winner. (In most live auctions, without a second bid the item is withdrawn and doesn't sell at all.)

Think about it - I have placed a maximum EBay proxy bid of $1,000 on Lot "X". The only other potential buyer bid $6.00. I win, and pay only $6.50, not $1,000, because the proxy bidding mechanism places my bid at one bidding increment over the next highest.

If it had been a live auction, although I was willing to pay $1,000, I only bid $6.50, until someone else bids more.

EBay or live, either way, it was the other guy, not me, who decided how much I would pay.

I have been using ebay for years, and i refuse to use sniping software or let it get "personal"
I bid the maximum i am willing to bid on an item and let it go... I am AMAZED by how much people will pay for some things! I have seen coins whos greysheet value is $5 go for 20 or 30 bucks! jeesh! My local coin shop isn;t that far away ;)
I usually only bid on stuff i can't find locally, but lately i am just saving my money for the local coin shows anyway...

You can go to www.auctionstealer.com. they have 2 services the FREE service will let you snipe on 10 aucions per month free and bid in the last 10 seconds
The PAY service is $4.95 mo. (maybe a little higher) - unlimited auctions and up to 3 SECONDS.

I stick with the free service, i do not bid enough to pay.

    Just fyi
    ;)
