The Swiss Coin Fairy left something under my pillow (really in my mailbox) that is one of the lots I won in NAC in May. It's an early denarius in fabulous style that still reflects what I would consider the Greek influence on style that is seen on the early Roman struck coinage such as the Roman didrachms in the 3rd century BC. Check out the tassels on the Dioscuri's boots! Anybody have some early denarii, say minted prior to 200 BC? Please share: Denarius, Sicily circa 209-208, AR 4.21 g. Helmeted head of Roma r., with loop beneath visor; behind head, branch and below chin, X. Rev. The Dioscuri galloping r.; below, ROMA in linear frame. Sydenham 201. RBW 322. Crawford 76/1a. Rare. Lovely old cabinet tone and complete, extremely fine / good extremely fine From the collection of E.E. Clain-Stefanelli.
As always, you've posted a really excellent example. I'm certainly envious. Rather than just a single coin, I'll post each of the 3 denarius-series denominations: Roman Republic AR Denarius(19.9mm, 3.87g, 4h). Anonymous("Crescent" series). Circa 207 B.C. Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; behind, X. Border of dots / Dioscuri galloping right; above, crescent; in linear frame, ROMA. Line border. Crawford 57/2; Sydenham 265 Ex RBW Collection, ex Paul Vecchi, 12/10/1988 Roman Republic AR quinarius(16.3 mm, 1.94 g, 11 h). Anonymous. ca. 211-210 B.C. Southeast Italian mint. Helmeted head of Roma right, V behind / ROMA, the Dioscuri riding right, each holds a spear; H below. Crawford 85/1a; Sydenham 174; RSC 33b. My poor man's version from about 5 decades later . At least my coin has an ass...right there behind Roma
Spork - Nice coins. I love the provenance of the Malter piece and I really like your crescent series, which I don't think I've seen before. Volodya - earth shattering, as usual. I particularly like the spear and the the highly ligatured ROMA. What is the reference on those coins (being too lazy to get up from my beer and go figure it out on my own)? Salient - I actually really like your coin and have been looking for the right ass myself. I mean, well, I'm not sure that came out right right...you know what I mean! Thanks all for the nice comments!
An exceptionnal portrait of Roma @Carthago My only contribution to the thread would be a sestertius. It's a bit off center on the obverse, but the portrait of Roma is still there and the off centering gives an impression of movement that I liked Republic, Sestertius Rome mint, ca 211-208 BC Head of Roma right, IIS behind Dioscuri riding right, two stars above, ROMA at exergue 1.06 gr, 13 mm Ref : RCV # 46, RSC # 4 Q
