That happens as well as dents and dings which are sufficiently small that they are not noticed without close examination, even at the time. On a rounded edge, even a slight flattening of the rim is enough to push material outward. This is the reason that some despise encapsulation, though the new designs which show the edges help.
Just a couple of clarifications, I should have sid a highly polished state VI (not IV) and the jaw "break" should be called a chip for accuracy. The chip being more of a gouge in the die than a break of the die. Subtle differences, but early copper is a subtle hobby.
