Just a little tip for you Mitchell, the pictures in eBay auctions aren't always of the actual items being sold. Many sellers use "stock photos". They should, however, be photos of coins of the same date/MM and grade.
If the auction doesn't specify that the photos are of the coin being sold, you should always make sure by using the "ask seller a question" feature.

And yes, sellers that withold feedback don't strike me as being comfortable or confident in their business practices.

And yes, I am aware of the new relationship between eBay and the A.N.A.
I will withold comment until more of the results of this relationship come to light, but let's just say that I am scheptical as to how much good it will be to your average coin collector.

I never doubt that the picture may be stock, or even one they downloaded from someone else. Often sellers will include "the coin pictured is the coin you are bidding on..." a lot of sellers will also indicate a stock photo.

But, to post a picture of an 1879, and the title of the auction is 1879, then, to ship an 1878 pushes the limits of even the issue of stock pictures.

Even though I will keep what the seller sent me, I notified Ebay anyway. They probably will not do anything, perhaps it will cause the seller to be a little more honest next time.

And it is not a total loss, it is a nice coin I received. If he had properly described it, and I won, I would be satisfied. BUT, the only reason I went after this coin was because of the second reverse, the apparent good condition of the coin, and the price. I have enough 1878-S Morgans, I went after the cherry. That is why I watch Ebay like I do.

I have gotten whizzed and polished Morgans off Ebay, and this is the least amount of "getting taken" of them all. It is probably as much about the principle as anything.

    Thanks for the input\feedback.

How about an 1804 Large Cent that I paid $27 for that turned out to be a spiked chin variety and I sold for $138? ;)

Really new to this, can you tell me what a "second reverse" is?

The second reverse has a parallel top arrow with a concave breast.
The third reverse has a slanted top arrow and a convex breast.

Ive been looking at Ebay coin items lately.. and though I have bought many things from Ebay... including some VERY nice US Stamps.. I always check feedback... and will never buy from anyone that holds the final bids and all feedback private..

Ok, does anyone have any good dealers on ebay that do sell nice items that have been consistant?

Heck, Ive been out of this for so long.. Im not even sure what to begin with..~~ Lets just say.. nice rolls of Jefferson Nickels, Franklin halves (singles or small sets), and perhaps Morgan Dollars?

    Thanks

I have a great e-bay seller that I go to, but, it's not often that they have coins, just once in a while, the ebay id is aprillovesus , they are very good sellers, if you ship the payment out when you say you are, they ship the product as soon as they get the money, and what they show is what you get, they also give you exact time and date as to when they took the product to the USPS before it reaches your home. But, most of the coins they offer are error coins

My scammer had a 99.8% positive feedback, and none mentioned that he listed one date, and shipped another.

I guess at some point, every scammer has their first victim.

I figure the chances are that he did not realize it was a second reverse, and realized that I got too good of a price for it.

Wonderful, thanks for the Ebay sellers ID.. I will take a peek from time to time... and error coins would also be welcome if I see something I might desire..~

Champ_1999 is good. He's great with communication and stands behind what he sells. He usually has some nice Morgans and other slabbed coins.

I love going through the sellers that claim to 'throw in some gold eagles'... ever notice that all the people that win those supposed gold eagles have like 4 feedbacks - and three of those are from the seller himself.

I'd like to see a class action law against some of those guys.

Not to mention all the scammers who sell fakes. We've seen a few get busted, but others keep going. There's one seller in particular who sells one fake Seated Dollar or Trade Dollar after another (the common Asian fakes), ad nauseum, rinse, lather, repeat...and yet I've seen no action against him. Several people I know have alerted eBay that almost all the coins they sell are fakes, but sadly, none of the auctions have been cancelled, nor has any action been taken as far as I can tell. It's frustrating to watch ripoff artists get away with this stuff.

Take a look at boxofficevideo10. He's a real trip. I've been watching his feedback rating drop steadily. He was at a whopping 93.5% last I looked. His feedback is a fun read :D

I have also run into some really decent sellers on ebay... so I don't think it's a bad place to shop around - and good deals can be made. But I think my user name was removed for inactivity a while back (it used to be my email address).

And yet people still buy from them.... *sigh*

[EDITED TO ADD -- You see 93.5% feedback, with everything kept private (bidders and item numbers in the feedback), run, run as fast as you can, hide the women and children, and head for the hills.]

I've started reporting a lot of these dealers. They give the rest of us coin dealers a bad name. Personally, I won't buy any coins from a seller who has a location showing of Shanghai and China. I'm sorry if there are honest dealers with that location but too many of them have way too many negatives for me to trust with new ones starting all the time (and isn't it interesting that they're always selling Trade Dollars? ) I never realized how many of those were minted :D

EBay decided a while ago to disallow email addresses as user ID's so they probably did remove yours. You can always start another one. We'll sell to you even though you would have a 0 feedback :D

Tell me about it. Another thing: No one thinks it's strange that someone who says "all sales are final / estate sale / I know nothing about coins," prices one 1872 Seated Dollar or 1876 Trade Dollar after another at $9.99 with no reserve *and keeps selling them* at that price, and willingly (ahem) "takes a bath" on selling a $300 coin for ten bucks?

    P. T. Barnum was right about suckers, sadly.
