Draped bust half dollar

    Thanks very much for the reply. I've had this a long time and for years it was my best, tho not necessarily most expensive, US coin. Next time, I'm back in the US I may have it submitted.

    On the issue of the legitimacy of the top 1806 half, there's a project I've always wanted to do. This is to record the weights of a number of different grades of Barber Halves and chart the relation of wear (numerical grade) to weight loss. Barber Halves are notorious for having many worn specimens available. Some years ago I bought a very accurate Ohaus scientific [digital] balance and am dying to use it for a project.

    Of course professionals can do this for Capped & Draped Bust halves. I don't have access to that many raw DB halves but I've a good number of the Capped Ones. [It's the Capped Bust silver dollar that I've had problems buying in high grade.]

    Has anyone done this? Unlike Mexican C&R 8 reales, I suspect the freshly minted Barber halves had a very small weight variance.
