As posted on other boards. "Dr. Richard G. Doty, Curator of the National Numismatic Collection at the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution, passed away at 7:50pm last night. An official announcement and appreciation will be forthcoming from the Smithsonian." Dr. Doty was a numismatic researcher in every sense of the word and the author of many books and articles. My particular favorite is "The Soho Mint and the Industrialization of Money" dealing with Boulton, Watt, Conder tokens, and steam power etc. The volume sits right next to my George Selgin "Good Money" and my Dalton & Hamer reference on Conder tokens. Dr. Doty was also a really, really nice, kind, and helpful person who was generous with his time and resources. Numismatics is the poorer today for his loss. Condolences go out to his family and the many friends who mourn his loss.
