Hello everyone I have been seeing this doubled edge effect on a lot of pennies lately, I know I have seen this before on here I just don't know what it's called, what it's caused by, and what it is. Anybody have some information?

So this is the result of a simple Misaligned die strike?

    Thanks,

On this coin, yes, it is obvious by the wider rim on one side. There are other causes that will give a rim that "doubled" appearance, collar clashes for one and an actual doubled die where the rim is doubled on the die.

Not a railroad rim. Those are struck partially out of the collar. Misaligned die.

    Minor mis-aligned dies are
    fairly common on most
    denominations; they are more
    like anomalies than errors.
