In so doing the diameter of the working hub would be slightly larger than normal.&nbsp; If this was so the elements around the rim would be slightly farther from the center of the hub than a normal hub would be.&nbsp; When a working die received an impression these expanded hubs it was taken out to be annealed then returned to the hubbing press the next day or so.&nbsp; At this point it was possible that a different working hub may be used to make the next impression in that working die.&nbsp; If a different hub happened to be a newer one the outer image (design elements) would be more further from the center of the hub resulting in overlapping images that then would spread towards the center of the die.</p><p>This is now thought to be the explanation of most of these type doublED dies but not all.&nbsp; The reason being that metal in the die does not always return to it&#039;s original diameter as it cools.&nbsp; Since it (the working dies and working hubs) needs at least two and during this era probably more hubbings each time it&#039;s hubbed and then anealed any of the extra impresions could result in overlapping images, ie: doublED dies. </p><p>Examples of Class II doublED dies:</p><p>1953 Proof Lincoln cent (1-O-II-C) - 1971 Lincoln Cent (1-O-II) and 1984-D (2-O-II)[/QUOTE]</p><p><br /></p>
