double die or no?

    Sheila, not sure if anyone has shared this with you, but this is a great link to understand double dies, the types of doubling, and how they happen.

    A true doubled die will show splits in the corners and serifs, here is an illustration to help with understanding that:

    Hmm not sure, I'm usually not to great on the coin error part of coin collecting so I'll leave it to the experts... ;)

    It's a little too "regular" for me to easily believe PMD, although it has to be a possibility. Just as likely is an odd (but not unknown) incident of machine doubling only showing on one letter. Here's where I'd be putting eyeball magnification on the feature, looking for (hopefully) tiny scrape marks left over from a hit if that's what happened. If MD, that whole area should look like it belongs there. Even if it's circulated since a hit, I'd expect a likelihood that there would still be hints under magnification.

    With the coin nowhere near my own loupe ( :) ), I'm leaning MD.
