Sorry but they are not on the same coin. Just thought I would share a couple of coins I don't think I posted before. Double Clip Missing reverse clad layer.
The photo for the dime is very dark and impossible to tell anything from it. I'd be reluctant to call it a missing clad without better photos and a weight for it.
The details on the reverse of the dime should be crisper and not mushy. And the copper should be brighter. (Can't tell from the photo.) But if it is mushy, the layer was removed after minting.
As you can see on this missing clad quarter, when the copper is struck the details are crisp and the copper remains bright. If the clad layer is removed after the strike, the details are mushy because the strike details are on the layer that was removed.
Here are the best pictures that I can get. I think this is a genuine missing clad layer that has seen a lot of circulation. If the clad layer fell off after striking would it still be considered an Mint error? Or a planchet error since the layer is not supposed to come off?
The weight is correct. However, if the clad layer was removed post mint, that will also give a correct weight. I can't tell, but I would guess this is not a missing clad layer error, but PMD. You can ask Fred W. or Paddy they would know. How would you know, if the clad layer "fell off" post mint, or if it was removed intentionally? Again Fred would know the answer.
