The plane was a world record holder for speed- if you survived piloting it - it was basically just a fuselage with stubby wings.

Inasmuch as Genl. Doolittle was famous for the raid - his most important and now overlooked contribution to aviation was he made the first ever IFR or all instrument flight with a takeoff and landing completely by looking at his compass and altimeter vs. VFR or visual flight rules flight by sight.
