The Queen's Beasts gold coins are amazing! I am so tempted to lose my discipline and start buying these. Have you seen the Welsh Dragon?! http://www.jmbullion.com/2017-1-4-oz-british-gold-queens-beast-dragon-coin/ I am hesitant to buy these because: 1) The premium is high: about $30 per 1/4 gold coin over spot, or about $120 an oz over. Or $40 over for a single 1 oz gold coin. 2) The lack of major security features make me a bit nervous. Does anyone else collect these?
cool enough to get for the design, but if you just want bullion then not worth that much over. wait for more experienced opinions...
The series is fairly new and I do collect them. I'm not a bullion buyer per se. I buy as a collector so I'm willing to pay a higher, over spot premium, than usual if I like the design. But I only get the silver versions as I can't afford the gold
British mint has some pretty brutal premiums on some series. I would define that as more of a numismatic offering than bullion and would be surprised if it ever just traded for spot
Yes, good point. I'm not sure why the British mint always has such high premiums, but I don't have anything besides sold old sovereigns in my collection because of it. I don't have any newer at all. Checking ebay auctions for brief reference, the queen's beasts seem to retain their value over the last couple years. However, I imagine in 20-50 years few people will care about the numismatic value of these coins. I'm in this for the long game and collect gold primarily as an extra retirement and secondarily because I enjoy having something physical. I fear that if I ever need to sell my gold and silver in my old age decades from now, the whole market will be flooded with lunar bs, cute fuzzy animal coins, and things like these. I just fear no one will actual care and it will still be all about the Eagles and Maple Leafs.
The RCM and RAM for their numismatic gold have brutal ones as well. 20-50 years is really impossible to guess what will be and won't be hot or even what prices will be. If you really like it I would get it. It will always have the metal value and besides if you get to enjoy something for a few decades that has a value as well even if you lose the premium on resale.
I like some modern bullion but mainly classic US coins. The Queens Beasts are one of the few moderns that get my attention. Maybe it's the combo of design and size for the silver offerings. The only downside is their mintages. Haven't seen any totals yet which makes me think they will pump out a lot.
I am collecting the 1oz Gold coins and tubes of the 2 oz silver coins. Found a deal on ebay through Apmex for $32.99 over spot for the 1 oz Queen's Beast Dragon. I've ordered tubes of the 2oz silver through JM Bullion and I think they are going to start shipping next week. Quite a beautiful coin though. The whole series is cool.
