Went to the Torex show today hoping to buy some Southern Italian didrachms or fractions but ended up just getting this bad boy.... RIC 507 Domitian denariius IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VI Laureate head right IMP XIIII COS XIII CENS P P P Minerva standing on capital of rostral colum, with spear and shield; to right owl Rome mint January 1- September 13, 87 AD 3.46g RIC 507 (C) Ex-Calgary Coin
That is one sharp Domitianfrom 87 CE. I do have this Domitian from 87 CE, though mine is darkly toned. Domitian AR Denarius 19mm. 3.10g. Rome Mint 87 A.D. Laureate head, r. IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VII Minerva advancing r., brandishing javelin and holding shield on prow of ship, eagle at feet. IMP XIIII COS XIII CENS P P P RIC II 92; RSC II 218
I have always like Domitian's coinage. He actually made an attempt (partially successful) to increase the purity of the silver denarius and the fabric of his coins looks first rate.
Not sure why he'd call it an eagle. Minerva is always with an owl. No always portrait side up. I think I'd get too much rubbing on the portrait the other way.
Perhaps it's a typo? Admittedly on poorer styled specimens the owl can look more like a blob with a tail.
