In your most interesting article you say that you have no interest in proofs or coins which are in mint condition, because touching them would put their value at risk and that you only enjoy coins that you can take out and hold for their historic and artistic beauty. For some collectors collecting proofs or coins in mint condition only may be for investment purposes only, but by doing this they can sometimes miss out on the real enjoyment of coin collecting. I can honestly say that I share your sentiment in what you say. When I regress to my childhood days to the pre-decimal days in the U.K., there was always a chance that you could receive interesting coins in your change. Of course some of the coins would be well worn, but regardless of condition to a true collector a coin is a coin, and when a Victorian bun penny would turn up my eyes would open up with excitement. Articles like yours are a testimony as to what coin collecting is all about.
Collect what you like and you won't go wrong, but I think if you do so with a mission in mind you'll end up a little better for it. Recently at the Indiana State show I watched @LostDutchman acquire a really nice coin collection from a deceased family member and it really solidified why I collect. It was neat to see a collection come full circle. I won't spoil too much because it may be featured on the next show but what I saw was a really nice set of coins that was clearly assembled with great care. The beneficiary of this collection was granted a really nice payday because of it too. Of course like most sets, it won't end up staying together but I think that is okay. This wonderful set of coins will soon find new homes and new collectors that enjoy the coins just as much as the individual who put the set together and that is the beauty of collecting--it all comes full circle in the end. All coin collections have an end whether we really want to think about it or not, I envision the end of mine as not only a good payday for either myself or the beneficiary of my set, but a good day for other collectors as well. Even if the day comes where I have to sell the set prematurely I want to be able to do so with the pride of having collected some nice coins that other people will be happy see come into the market, even if it is on a localized scale. That's why at least I feel that if your going to purchase a coin and your debating about whether or not to just fill the hole or to buy something nicer and spend a bit more, I would suggest the latter. I think everyone benefits more in the end. The day I decided to sell my two nicest coins in my 7070 and buy all culls to fill it out was the lowest point of enjoyment for me in the hobby, and I'm ever grateful I decided to find a new purpose in collecting.
