What are your opinions on this strike-thru? Does it add or detract from its "GSA" and "1885cc" premium? What would you grade it and price it at?
Detract. Isn't that wear on her ear? And what's going on with her cheek and the eagle's tail feathers?
No, I fully read it. I thought you were saying that the strike-thru was on the reverse, until the eagle's right wing (left side of coin).
I had everything typed out with locations of where I felt the strike-thru's where, possibly cloth or another soft material. I did a phone update and everything is wishy washy now. Should I dump the coin and replace later on with a better example? What should I ask at a minimum?
I'll leave that to the experts. My $0.02 is that *I* would not buy it and am not sure what you should ask for it. Hope that helps in some small way.
I'm assuming that you thought the strikethrough was on the tail feathers as that's the only thing I can see that could be one - and may or may not be. I say may or may not be because given the obvious scrape on the obv it's possible that what happened to the tail feathers may have been caused by a similar scrape. And if you look at it close it looks like metal may have been scraped away there. At least that's how it looks to me based on the pics. But be that as it may, whatever it is, it is most definitely a detraction. Any kind of flaw, from contact marks to hairlines to scrapes to scratches to strikethoughs - and they are all flaws - is a detraction for it can be nothing else. Even a weak strike is a detraction. As for the grade of the coin, well, in my opinion that depends entirely on what did cause that on the tail feathers. If it is a scrape then it is severe enough that the coin would be a problem coin and ungradeable. If it's a strikethrough then yeah the coin could still be graded as the scrape on the obv is not severe enough. But in any case I agree with the previous comment that that is wear on the ear and thus the could grade no better than 58. As for what you should ask - tough call. I think if I were trying to sell it I'd offer it at no reserve and hope for the best.
The cheek is very distracting to me and would detract from the coin. If you could get rid of it, I'd suggest it.
It's a detraction to me. It shouldn't detract from the value though, someone would like it in their collection.
I like the coin. Id keep her but unfortunately life sometimes hits you in the face like a brick wall and you suddenly wake up and discover the root of all your problems. Coins and money can be replaced by buying low and selling higher. Family time ruined by bad sentiments can't be replaced or bought but a better effort can be put forth by me in the future. I could sell several smaller things and keep the GSA's or sell 1-2 GSA and keep the other coins for my daughter's while building up a secret cash stash.
Just saying that I think it's collectible as an error. I have the same problem, I like buying and not selling. Your Kiddo only grows up once.
I bought this one from my father since my mom wanted Vegas money. It could have been part of my inheritance, which is now going to be Silver Strikes instead of US coins. Even though that hobby is slowly dying off as the casino machines disappear, my father's collection is insane. Massively hoarder insane.
As you can see, you'll never get total agreement on such things. Personally, I too feel it detracts, but this certainly doesn't mean that another person will find it interesting. Then the only question is what they'll be willing to pay; many will still want it discounted, but select others, who knows...
It's a negative for me. It will probably grade 63, and will sell as a generic 85-CC in 63, then you can find a nicer one.
