You would have to ask the writers of the CPG why they are using the wrong term. I don't know if they still do, but at one time the VAM book gave variety designations to coins solely based on the presence of clash marks. Since clash marks do not constitute a variety, I have always been somewhat leary of VAM's.
When I was collecting Morgan dollars, I did like certain VAM's like the 1885-CC Doubled Dash and the 1882-CC Counter Clash, but I stopped altogether when they came up with the 1921 "Scribbles". For me, VAM's became a joke. Chris
