Look at the surfaces and the details. There appears to be something on Miss Liberty's neck. Or could it just be the way the photo was taken? And the price looks is to good for a real coin. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1825-Capped...-Lot-MZ-690-/331581387808?hash=item4d33ca7420
In the late teens and mid 20's there were a lot of double profiles that this coin shows. I had a nice 24/24 with a double profile . As for the grainy fields those I question . But if I had this coin in hand I could make a better judgment or real or fake. After a second look the hit under the bust looks fresh and filled with plaster or what it was cast in.
Why isn't this coin in a TPG holder? The seller has some other coins in TPG holders for sale. That tells me all I need to know.
Looks like strong strike with an old die. MD and lines from the metal quickly shifting into the die make me think it is die struck too, it looks real to me. Looks like the photos made it look wierd, nothing screams fake
Look at the reverse.......I've never seen a busty reverse like that. Look at the 'A' in America.......totally weird.
Looks like the very worn 1818 I have that no one would counterfeit, a worn die and the metal shifting in the die would do that, almost like the stretching on the letters you see on some zinc cents people post here. Typical of capped bust halves Not my photo of coin
Ebay coin appears to be a very early die state..........the 1817 is genuine and in no way relates to the ebay coin.
If this is real, the $699 I think would be a great price. But what is the roughness on Miss Liberty's neck? The pebble looking texture in the fields. And there is an off color hit on the bust. I can't say it is fake. It just doesn't look right to me from the picture.
Looks like an O-102. I have a '32 with die striations similar to the coin pictured, although not quite as severe....... O-113a
The razor-burn on the neck isn't something I've seen before, lol . It could just be the photos but mint state detail with no trace of luster?? Strange coin.
Between the two, AcesKings looks more like a real coin. This is base on the two photos. The Ebay owner may have the contrast turned up real high. I guess this could make the photo look weird.
The Ebay coin is from a die pair at the very end of its' life. That's why the A's look the way they do.
The roughness on the neck appears to be from die rust. Was this obv used for other die marriages? Especially marriages with the obv in an earlier state? I'm thinking of the possibility that the obv was used for a long time and was worn, then set aside and started to rust. Then it was paired up with another worn rev die.
It was used with the die marriages of 102, 103, & 104. According to Dave's site, the 102 was the first use, and 103 the last. The 103 pictured on his site doesn't show any of the striations on the obverse that the Ebay coin shows, so altered in some manner. http://www.maibockaddict.com/1825-o-103-r4-capped-bust-half-dollar.shtml
