I am looking to buy a 1937 D 3 Leg Buffalo nickel. I have noticed on some slabs the reference of FS-020.2. What is this reference? Does this classification make the coin a greater value? Whenever I search for it online the only return is coins for sale with this designation.
FS numbers are assigned by Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton as found in The Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties and/or Cherrypickers' So FS-020.2 is a die variety for the 1937 D 3leg Buffalo nickel
Whitman publishes Mr. Fivaz's Cherrypickers guides in 2 volumes. They are available from Amazon.com and other online retailers. I picked up the latest edition at my local Barnes & Noble outlet. Be aware that once you get the book(s), you'll be spending an inordinate amount of time checking your collection for varieties!
