gorgous coins...out of my price range in gernal. plus, not being very familiar with them..i'm kind of scared of fakes. i do plan on having at least one at some time....it's on my list.
Sweet => great Talers, brother-Z ... Ummm, yup I have one ... my sweet ol' bear!! GERMANSTATES, Anhalt-Bernburg. Alexius Friedrich Christian, AR 1/3 Taler 1796-1834 1799 HS Diameter: ?? mm Weight: 7.03 grams of 83.3% Silver Obverse: Crowned-Bear advancing left on crenellated wall containing arched door below Reverse: Three-line legend and date; •H•S• (mint-master) below Reference: Mann 728a; Jaeger 41b, KM 70 .... it has very cool toning that makes me smile when I gaze at it!! (yummy, yummy!!)
I have always wanted to get a Taler for myself yet but can yet justify the cost. Too many ancients at the moment. I will definitely be sending you a message when it comes time to make that purchase though Zohar! I think the Salzburg D-3509 and D-1248 are my two favourites because they both have intricate scenes on the obverse and reverse.
OK, I admit I was impressed with the Thalers. Some clicking around and I saw the ancient and duuurr. There are some great coins there. I have to ask, what's up with all the slabs. Don't you want to handle your 5/5 - 5/5 AU coins? You probably don't, if you are like me they will be 2/5 - 3/5 by the end of the week.
Ancientnoob - thank you. I am a newbie to ancients and have a nominal sense of grading (unlike Talers where I am quite proficient). As such, I need 3rd party validation of what I view as eye appeal and style. When spending more than nominal funds on this "gear" I need the 3rd party opinion to back mine.
You guys probably paid way too much for your Talers. All you need is $29 and this Ebay seller: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1855-German...S_World_Coins&hash=item3f3cf82e0d#ht_22wt_902
Unforunately, the fake looks fricken awesome (if I didn't have a cluster of you pros checking-out my purchases, I'm sure that a lot more fakes would make it by this ol' goalie!!)
