It may push up metal prices but nothing more.

The Chinese fake are far less dangerous than Bulgarian fakes and some Italian fakes.

If "community spread" increases to the level it did in China and appears to be doing in Korea and other nations, and it likely will, then attendance at coin shows will dramatically decrease as will gatherings of all types. For example, Japan has cancelled public school for all of March. Soccer games are being played to empty stadiums. Movie theatres are closing. But in this country, so far, it hasn't prevented people from showing up at political rallies. Some of this numismatic business will simply transition to venues like on-line auctions and sales but much of it will not, especially for small and/or local dealers. In addition, there will be a general diminution of all business as people "hunker down" both physically and financially. There may be an uptick in bullion coinage but I think the numismatic market will suffer.

If these projections occur and are prolonged for a sufficient but unknown time, then it would present buying opportunities for collectors.

My first decision is now to lower my numismatic budget to keep cash buying only if I find very good bargain. There are a rush on gold but not on gold collecting just bullions.

To my opinion interesting coins old coins are too pricey artificially and there are serious possibility to a fall in prices. Auctions in Europe first will certainly tell us what will happen.

I refer to some Greek Syracuse coins forgeries made by south Italian mafia in recent time this concern only very pricey coins don’t worry but they used antics coin so even at spectrography you cant be sure and the guy who do the forgery is a master in this art. None of you have this coins don’t worry it fool some famous coins dealers auction houses and very rich collectors. This coins in price range 100 000 usd.

    I see two things happening:

    1) Coin shows may be cancelled or poorly attended due to fears of having a number of people in closed quarters all handling items that have been handled by many other people.

    2) People may attempt to diversify their portfolios by getting out of the stock market and investing in slabbed coins they know nothing about. This may create a bubble for such items that will burst when the viral threat has disappeared (one or two years?).

For coin show like any fair or convention for sure they will be impacted as public auction attendance too even if most of public auction are live now some people love and some dealers acting as agent should be reluctant to be in the room. Among those people some will not bid in other way. This first effect should impact sales at shows very quickly surely this month or beginning of April.

For slabbed coins not sure as it is safer and well known to invest in gold itself without a numismatic premium.

Coin shows in Asia are already being postponed just as the Korean baseball league has been and the Japanese baseball league is playing in empty stadiums as a precaution.

I'm not trying to minimize the new virus, but the death rates are likely lower than we think. It's very likely more people have been exposed and recovered just as they would with the flu that never got reported given the population density in China and just medicine and accurate reporting from places like Iran.

We've seen similar situations like this before in the past when Bird Flu first came about as an example.

I assume your statistics are for Chinese males? According to Wikipedia, in 2014 two thirds of Chinese men were smokers, and there is no reason to believe that this has changed during the interim. Further, it is known that smokers have an elevated risk of succumbing to the virus, so predicting outcomes based on age and sex really do not apply to other countries where far fewer people smoke. We old timers are in pretty good shape, IMO.

I think the last thing to worry about in the event of a new virus circling the globe is the coin market. True, it's not a 1918 type event at this time, but if the virus mutates into something more deadly, which is hard to predict, that could change quickly. That's the scary thing about new viruses, we don't know what they will or can do as they spread over time. Hopefully it will fly around the globe and burn out, but if it doesn't and it mutates, then we'll have much bigger problems than the coin market on our hands.

Great answer rich or poor all collectors will have other more important things to do that numismatic hobby. If the virus spread widely in US and worldwide for a long period and it lead to a deep economic crisis the reality will be how to survive.

For the poor or normal people how not to get fire, to pay their bill included hospital and medical bills. How to deal with unemployment and money lost in stocks and savings. The rich will have to struggle to to make running their company and against hillness too.

If the epidemic is less than 6 months all recovered quickly and I hope that people and politician and industry leaders will have learnt of this experience.

I think they’ll get it under control or develop a vaccine before it becomes a major pandemic I see the gold and bullion markets going up and the economy affected somewhat by less imports from China which would likely help domestic production and markets. It may cause price raises on some things but I feel it’s only temporary and will all balance out. Coin show attendance may be affected but many collectors are passionate and would go regardless

I think European countries will get the virus under control. Remember they went through the Plague several hundred years ago and the 1918 Pandemic flu 100 years ago. Speaking of my grandmother's baby sister was a victim of that. Great grandma got the flu while she was pregnant, she survived but the baby's heart was affected and didnt survive long after she was born.

    Might be worth it if:
    • It's reusable
    • I don't have to lose the beard
    • The price of regular masks keeps increasing

I’ll take my chances. I don’t like cities and large gatherings of people anyway
