I can not spend coins. There is something in my psyche that just will not let me do it. It is so bad that after I search rolls/ pocket change my wife has to take the non keepers back to the bank. Kie
What I find interesting is who posted in these old threads and are they still around and active. Starting to feel like an oldster and I just joined in 2005. Even though I lurked well before that. And as to the topic - I seldom ever spend change, maybe one of the new dollar coins. All my change goes into some jars as xmas presents. I think the kids look forward to it since there is always 1 or 2 things they wanted and did not get.
I'll spend a dollar coin when making small purchases just to watch the clerks face , and believe me its funny, a lot of them just say whats this or is this real money. lol
As long as they figure it out eventually. One guy in Baltimore got arrested for using a $2 bill: the Best Buy clerk thought it was counterfeit, called the police, and the responding officer thought so too. I think I've read stories like that involving dollar coins, though none turned up in casual Googling.
Nice! I do something similar. When I can find deals on worn IHP and Buff rolls, I leave a few every now and then where kids might find them. I remember when I was a kid and would find an old coin...made my day!
Oh now Mark c'mon ! That can't be true. Everybody knows that nobody sticks around Coin Talk - they did a poll and everything ! Didn't you get the memo ?
Do I spend coins ? Sure... so I can get rid of 'em. I rarely have more than $1.00 worth of change; when I can make exact change, I do. I just don't make a point of spending for the point of getting coins in circulation i.e. 50c, $1 Sacs.
I get change check it and either spend it or throw it in my jar. Last time I it financed a large amt of the family vacation.
Of course I spend coins - the ones that I get in change. What I also do is pick up a roll of, say, the latest €2 commems, put some nice ones (without scratches or "odd spots") aside for myself and maybe swappers, and then spend the rest. However, coins are not spent any more once they are in my collection. There may be exceptions, such as when I replace a ho-hum circulation coin with a better preserved one. Then I will put the ho-hum piece into my wallet, and spend it ... Christian
Brainstorm about coins for special tips I like the idea of dropping something unusual and fun in the tip jar at the coffee shop, but I'm not sure what would work. "Fun", for someone making that kind of money, probably means "readily convertible into normal cash", so exotics wouldn't be good. (Though maybe something really beautiful in addition to a regular tip would work). At the same time, it should be recognizable as something different. Pre-1965 silver would just get mistaken for normal change. Silver Eagles would be liquid and recognizable, but even as an occasional treat I don't want to spend *that* much on a tip for my latte. Maybe for a restaurant meal. Fractional silver seems to be hard to find. The best I've come up with is Franklin half dollars, but better ideas are more than welcome! And of course it's possible that the whole notion is a bad idea from the start.
