Tell her too bad it's French because then it would only be worth 10 bucks, but if it was American it would be worth 500 dollars.

That's not a DATE 99/8 although she said 1799 Slash 8 as in / as you would use in the moth / day / year not a slash as you would use in a phone number 000 - 555 - 0000 So, would this be correct 1799/8 ? And is there such a coin?

According to my blue book, there are two varieties of the 1799 draped bust cent. One is the regular one, where the date is 1799, where the die was made for 1799 and not used previously. The second is the overdate, where the die for the 1798 was reused and a 9 was sunk in over the 8, making it a 1799. I am not an expert in this type coin, so I can only give you what I find in the standard book. There should be other people here that are better with this coin. You will want to photo the holder when you get that from the lady. Also, from your pics, I don't know if yours will grade AG3. It may only be P1 or 2 (Poor instead of Almost Good). The prices I quoted from the Blue Book (which is generally dealers or wholesale price) represent AG3. I didn't look to see what retail price is supposed to be. Also the prices in these books are not hard and fast. It depends on how tough the coin is. You might want to ask some here to try to grade it. Take a couple more pics.

Until you can verify this is an authentic coin and it's true value, you might want to hold off paying the lady more. What you may want to do if you find it grades to a value you can sell it for, is then base what you might offer the lady later on.

Many coins can only be found with a lot of wear. Some are just tough coins. From what I understand a tough coin means that it is not very often that one comes up for sale. So if someone is having a collection of these, they may want to purchase one that is in really poor condition if the cost for one (if even one comes for sale) in a much better condition is prohibitive for their budget.

I'd say that you should use either PCGS or NGC for this, depending on what else you have to send in with it. Or if you go to a major coin show that has PCGS or NGC there, you can submit it there and save yourself the cost one way of registered mail.

Ask someone here you trust for a good answer on this, as everyone seems to have a varying opinion on the top tpg's. I've concluded that for the coins I have, either PCGS or NGC will be fine, and I just have to get a total of 5 I want to submit at once. It will happen early next year, since I also have to purchase a subscription for it.

Good luck with your coin. Seems you've found a real keeper!
