I can't believe this discussion has reached three pages. If you don't count shipping cost, tax, and the gas you spend making a special trip to pick up the "bargain", you're fooling yourself. (And, when it comes to tax accounting, you're leaving money on the table.) But if you want to leave out shipping so you can feel better about your purchase, or brag more about it, I won't stop you. Heck, I'd offer to sell you all the cheap coins you want for half-price -- one at a time, with price-and-a-half for shipping costs -- if it weren't against the rules to make buy/sell offers here.
Detecto is one of those minds that only comes along once in a generation and to have him here at CT is a privilege, really.
Fuel to the fire, my friend.. A once in a generation mind and a legend in his own mind all at the same time. Hope his shoulders are strong. Yes, but she is (was, or at least could be) attractive, so at least there is understandable reason for her popularity. That said, a train wreck is a train wreck, I suppose...
Another thing to consider that I did not think about before is after 50 auctions a month, Ebay charges listing fees and these fees are based on starting bids. Instead of paying the extra fees, some just add a reserve price to the shipping because they will not sell the item under a minimum amount.
I never buy junk silver on ebay, but I do like to surf on there from time to time to see how much people are buy junk silver on there. I saw an auction recently for a couple of 40% silver halves and the price it sold at was $4 and shipping was I believe $5. So who ever won the auction took into consideration the shipping when buying the coins for melt. I see it all the time on ebay and its obvious that people add the shipping in when buy for melt value at least. It seems shipping doesn't matter as much for a collectable coin but for melt value it does.
